GE and NVIDIA Join Forces to Accelerate AI Adoption in Healthcare

GE Healthcare and NVIDIA today announced they will deepen their 10-year partnership to bring the most sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) to GE Healthcare's 500,000 imaging devices globally and accelerate the speed at which healthcare data can be processed.

The scope of the partnership, detailed today at the 103rd annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), includes the announcement of the new NVIDIA-powered Revolution Frontier CT, advancements to the Vivid E95 4D Ultrasound and development of GE Healthcare's Applied Intelligence analytics platform.

The new CT system in the Revolution Family is two times faster in imaging processing than its predecessor, due to its use of NVIDIA's AI computing platform. The Revolution Frontier is FDA cleared and expected to deliver better clinical outcomes in liver lesion detection and kidney lesion characterization because of its speed - potentially reducing the need for unnecessary follow-ups, benefitting patients with compromised renal function and reducing non-interpretable scans with Gemstone Spectral Imaging Metal Artefact Reduction (GSI MAR).

"Our partnership with GE Healthcare brings together great expertise in medical instruments and AI to create a new generation of intelligent instruments that can dramatically improve patient care," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

NVIDIA, which has helped pioneer the spread of AI across a growing range of fields, including self-driving cars, robotics and video analytics, is working with GE Healthcare to spread its application in healthcare. GPU-accelerated deep learning solutions can be used to design more sophisticated neural networks for healthcare and medical applications-from real-time medical condition assessment to point-of-care interventions to predictive analytics for clinical decision-making. For patients, the partnership aims to drive lower radiation doses, faster exam times and higher quality medical imaging.

GE Healthcare and NVIDIA also announced the following at RSNA today:
    • NVIDIA Platform Powers 4D Ultrasound Visualization: The Vivid E95 4D Ultrasound System, on display at RSNA, uses NVIDIA GPUs to provide fast, accurate visualization and quantification while streamlining workflows across the cSound imaging platform. NVIDIA GPUs accelerate reconstruction and visualization of blood flow and improve 2D and 4D imaging for Echo Lab and Interventional deployments.
    • New GE Healthcare Applied Intelligence Powered by NVIDIA Technology: Modules of the new analytics platform will use NVIDIA GPUs, the NVIDIA CUDA parallel computing platform and the NVIDIA GPU Cloud container registry to accelerate the creation, deployment and consumption of deep learning algorithms in new healthcare analytic applications that will be seamlessly integrated into clinical and operational workflows and equipment.
"Healthcare is changing at remarkable speed, and the technologies that will transform the industry should reflect that pace," said Kieran Murphy, President and CEO of GE Healthcare. "By partnering with NVIDIA, GE Healthcare will be able to deliver devices of the future - intelligent machines capable of empowering providers to improve the speed and accuracy of diagnoses for patients around the world."

The average hospital generates 50 petabytes of data annually, through medical images, clinical charts and sensors, as well as operational and financial sources. Yet, less than 3 percent of that data is actionable, tagged or analyzed. GE Healthcare and NVIDIA will harness more of this data by combining powerful applications built with lighthouse customers, best-in-class medical devices and the fast processing speeds of GPUs - all to make AI a reality in healthcare.

GE Healthcare Partners with Intel to Accelerate Imaging from Edge to Cloud

GE Healthcare today announced an expanded partnership with Intel that aims to enhance patient care and reduce costs for hospitals and health systems using digital imaging solutions, deployed via edge and cloud. Together, the companies anticipate their solutions will offer greater hospital efficiency through increased asset performance, reduced patient risk and dosage exposure - with faster image processing - and expedited time to diagnosis and treatment.

Through the expanded partnership, GE Healthcare will use the new Intel Xeon Scalable platform with an aim towards lowering the total cost of ownership for imaging devices by up to 25 percent. Paired with GE Healthcare's imaging solutions, the Intel Xeon Scalable platform may improve radiologists' reading productivity compared to the prior generation by reducing first image display down to under 2 seconds and full study load times down to under 8 seconds.

"Radiologist workdays can be enhanced by use of real-time data analytics and increased performance," said Jonathan Ballon, vice president Internet of Things Group at Intel. "The combination of innovative imaging solutions from GE Healthcare with the breakthrough speed of Intel processors promises great advances in imaging that could make a real difference in patient care."

Building on their 20-year relationship, GE Healthcare and Intel are also investing in a new, first-of-its-kind digital development lab in downtown Chicago. The Joint Performance Acceleration Lab (JPAL) will be dedicated to the development, testing and validation of new innovations across a wide spectrum of GE Healthcare imaging hardware and software solutions. This expanded partnership is intended to help enable the highest possible radiology productivity at the lowest total cost of ownership for healthcare providers and clinicians by improving the performance of their imaging fleets.

"Some of our longest-standing modalities are now being infused with the latest in digital technologies - which requires security, precision, speed and efficiency," said David Hale, Senior Vice President of Enterprise Imaging Digital Solutions at GE Healthcare. "To ensure we are delivering the best possible outcomes at the lowest cost in this digital age, GE Healthcare is partnering with Intel to co-develop on and off premise solutions through our new lab and accelerate these with the Intel Xeon Scalable platform."

As part of the expanded GE Healthcare and Intel relationship, the two companies will use the workload-optimized Wind River Titanium Control software virtualization platform to enable hospitals and health systems to deploy more secure, edge solutions that improve agility and reduce operating costs in healthcare environments that require real-time performance and continuous service availability. Wind River Titanium Control software on Intel Xeon Scalable platforms will provide a more secure, real time, intelligent solution for the healthcare edge.

"The combination of powerful Intel processing at the edge with Wind River's virtualization technology allows GE Healthcare to deliver a high availability end-to-end secure healthcare solution that is game changing for the industry," said Jim Douglas, President, Wind River. "Through this collaboration, healthcare applications can achieve the uptime, security and low latency that is required for critical services installed at the healthcare edge."

GE and Intel Invest $250 million in New Market Opportunity

GE and Intel Corporation announced today an alliance to market and develop home-based health technologies that will help seniors live independently and patients with chronic conditions manage their care from the comfort of their home or wherever they choose.
GE Healthcare will sell and market the Intel Health Guide, a care management tool designed for healthcare professionals who manage patients with chronic conditions. With the dramatic increase of people with chronic conditions and an aging population there is a need to extend care from the hospital to the home. GE Healthcare and Intel are helping to address these pressing issues. The market for telehealth and home health monitoring is predicted to grow from $3 billion in 2009 to an estimated $7.7 billion by 2012.

GE Chairman of the Board and CEO Jeff Immelt and Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini announced the alliance today, along with an investment of more than $250 million over the next five years for the research and product development of home-based health technologies. Key elements of the announcement include:
    • Global product research and development alliance: GE Healthcare and Intel will work together, combining their complementary skill sets and extensive research resources to accelerate the innovation and commercialization of next-generation home health technologies. Both companies also plan to expand their current development programs in home health and independent living technologies to include new areas such as fall prevention, medication compliance, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and personal wellness monitoring. The combination of Intel's leading capabilities in ethnographic research and technology development combined with GE's world-class expertise and global distribution strengths in healthcare IT, electronic medical records, critical care and passive monitoring is a strong strategic fit.
    • Commercial business agreement: GE Healthcare will sell and market the Intel Health Guide, a personal health system, in the United States. GE Healthcare's capabilities in disease management, and its distribution reach in the healthcare sector will help drive understanding of the benefits of this innovative technology, which includes patients' self-monitoring of health status and a direct communications channel to healthcare professionals.
Immelt said, "Improving healthcare accessibility and reducing costs are essential to economic recovery and growth. We think this partnership offers the potential to lower costs by keeping people out of hospitals while giving health professionals the data they need to deliver the best possible care. Intel and GE share a vision to use technology to bring effective healthcare into millions of homes and to improve the lives of seniors and people with chronic illness. Together we can deliver innovative products to serve this rapidly growing market."

Otellini commented, "Most of the healthcare discussions today focus on the integration of more technology into traditional healthcare settings. While those investments are necessary and will create a more efficient healthcare system, it is not sufficient to meet the growing needs that are about to impact a system that is already at a saturation point. The GE and Intel partnership will not only help seniors and the chronically ill, but will also take a giant step forward in changing how healthcare is delivered."

GE and Intel are currently active in patient monitoring and home health, with well-recognized brands and strong sector expertise:
    • GE Quiet Care is a remote passive activity and behavioral monitoring system for seniors, alerting caregivers to changes that may signal potential health issues or emergency situations such as a fall or emerging health problem. It is used primarily in assisted living facilities across the United States. GE Healthcare also brings significant capabilities in the development of products for critical care patient monitoring, cardiac diagnostics, home respiratory care, and healthcare IT such as electronic medical records and clinical decisions support.
    • The Intel Health Guide is a comprehensive personal health system combining an in-home patient device with an online interface to allow clinicians monitor patients in their homes and manage care remotely. The Health Guide includes vital sign collection, patient reminders and communications tools such as video conferencing and alerts.
