How to Generate a System Sleep Diagnostics Report in Windows 10


A System Sleep Diagnostics generates a report of intervals when the user was not present (idle) over the last three or specified days on the system, and if the system went to sleep.

This tutorial will sow you how to generate a System Sleep Diagnostics report to show intervals when a user went idle, idle duration, and sleep state entered in Windows 10.

*Warning You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to run a System Sleep Diagnostics report.


EXAMPLE: "powercfg /SystemSleepDiagnostics" usage






Here's How:

1. Open an elevated command prompt.

2. Type the command you want to use below into the elevated command prompt, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

*note It's recommended to save the report as a .html file to be able to easily use and read it.
(For .html file with default 3 day duration)
*Arrow powercfg /SystemSleepDiagnostics /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\System-Sleep-Diagnostics.html

(For .html file with specified duration)
*Arrow powercfg /SystemSleepDiagnostics /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\System-Sleep-Diagnostics.html /Duration days

(For .xml file with default 3 day duration)
*Arrow powercfg /SystemSleepDiagnostics /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\System-Sleep-Diagnostics.xml /XML

(For .xml file with specified duration)
*Arrow powercfg /SystemSleepDiagnostics /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\System-Sleep-Diagnostics.xml /XML /Duration days

*note Substitute days in the commands above with a number 1 to 14 to specify the number of days you want to analyze for the report.





3. Open the System-Sleep-Diagnostics.html or System-Sleep-Diagnostics.xml file saved to your desktop to see the report in your default web browser (ex: Internet Explorer).

4. This is a copy of my laptop's System Sleep Diagnostics report from a System-Sleep-Diagnostics.html file viewed in Internet Explorer as an example of what is reported. (see screenshots below)

*note Each interval is numbered. You can click on an interval (ex: 1) to jump straight to its analysis results.





*note This is an example analysis result for interval 1. Each interval will have its own separate analysis result to review.

system diagnostic report broken after KB3140768

I use the performance monitor system diagnostic report. It collects data for 60 seconds then generates a report. After installing update KB3140768 performance monitor does not generate the system diagnostic report correctly.

 

My PC freezes with 100% disk usage. Bios also.

The S0 state basically is the normal fully on and running state. The computer is on and running, and not asleep or hibernate.

I was hoping to find out why the PC did not sleep when it should have.
Now i know this WORKING (running) state can happen when Win 10 should be sleeping.
Here's a snip of a report that shows some info not in the tutorial report.

Thank you for this. I've recently restarted participating in PrimeGrid. I have EVERY setting in BIOS and Windows set to High Performance and the sleep to 'NEVER' eveywhere yet every day I get back from work, the damn thing's sleeping. I will test this out this afternoon *Nerd.
