Not familiar with AV-Test (Germany). Perhaps TairikuOaami can opine in reference to their reputation.

  2. Do I need Norton since I have Windows Defender?

It probably just means that the offline and online detection rates were identical. Keep in mind that this testing technique is quite novel in its approach, and that it’s very likely to undergo some revisions in the near future. Also
remember that there’s no single AV test that can tell us the whole story; and that the co-evolution of the
threat landscape and the adaptations of the various AV apps is so rapid that the scores in this particular test might already be outdated. Still, choosing a better AV app can make a real difference, and the choice should always be based on
    the best evidence available.

  3. do I need to get a virus protection and not count on defender

Unfortunately, understanding how antivirus apps work can get very technical – so for non-technical users, the details on how things work might just be a source of confusion, or, as Mr. Kaspersky often points out, a deliberate distraction. So lots of
people will be less interested in knowing “how” the various AV apps work than in knowing “how well” they work. And if you’re inclined to base your choices on how well things work, then you should know that a lot has changed since the Sans Institute published
its article on “Choosing Your Anti-virus Software” in 2002.

We now have several full-fledged AV testing labs up and running, and these provide us with an evidence-based evaluation of AV apps that might prove useful in making your choice – although the scores in many of these tests tend to be so closely clustered
at the top end that they’re probably more useful in a process of elimination than they are for making a final choice. It’s important to note that Defender has been making substantial gains in these tests lately, and that there’s certainly no call to replace
it if you’re happy with it.

List of AV Testing Labs - AV-Comparatives

And these days we even have an Anti-malware Testing Standards Organization that sets some basic standards for these labs:

    AMTSO

The AV-Comparatives lab seems to be setting the pace with its Real-World Protection test, which sets the criterion for evaluating AV apps exactly where it should be set – it ranks these apps based on their ability to prevent your PC from being compromised
    in a real-world scenario:

Best free antivirus to use with Windows 10 Pro?

Windows Defender actually does very well in this test, which is pretty remarkable if you consider that it’s tested with these default settings:

Potentially Unwanted Application Protection (PUA Protection) is turned off.

Controlled Folder Access ransomware protection is turned off.

Attack Surface Reduction rules are not applied.

Block at first Sight zero-day threat protection is set to its lowest possible level.

So once you’ve enabled these “next-gen” features, you’ll actually have at your disposal a rather formidable enterprise-class AV app:

If I buy a new computer running Windows 10 do I need additional security such as McAfee?

What is interesting is the score by Symantec (Norton). Every time somebody mentions it, you get a flood of anti Norton comments saying it is garbage basically, and yet it has consistently scored high in all tests in recent years. Most anti comments are based on experiences of a decade ago!

They're remembering the situation from 10 years ago and haven't tried it since. I had Norton a few years ago and it felt light on my system.

I'm my own best protection, everything else is just a bonus or after the fact remedy. After all, it's there,it's free and at least a decent AV.

  10. Haven't fully switched over to Defender yet, despite my signature says for this Desktop, I just reluclant a bit, as not sure I fully trust it, after using Avast for the last 10 years, but maybe when I do the Fall Creators update i'll leave Avast out and see how I like Defender then.

If I remember correctly the 2009 version was a complete rewrite and it has been very good since then and use it on my systems. The biggest problem is with their version updates. Seems there are always a few bugs and takes a while to clean them up. In the past they would release a major update every year and the user could delay updating until all the bugs was squashed. Since version 22 was released a few years ago, all of their updates have used the same major number (22) but the minor number has changed and is at 10 now. No way for user to prevent these updates from installing as they are pushed through Live Updates. Its still my 1st choice as it does its job.
