Windows 10: getting around a specific Win 10 installation hang up

Hello,

I'm wondering about getting around a specific Win 10 installation hang up. After reinstalling Win 7 Ultimate and updating Win 7 SP1 rather swiftly, all other updates crawled to a standstill. I couldn't, then, update the Win 10 icon option that should appear in the taskbar, and since I didn't want to miss the Win 10 deadline, I went to MS site to get the update (from here: How to Upgrade to Windows 10 - Microsoft on Firefox. Does using a Firefox link affect installation in any way like the kb file mentioned below?)

All went smoothly until now it has been stuck at 99% installation complete for about 24 hours straight. The red HD light flicks intermittently, every 10 or 6 or 12 seconds and so forth. Not sure if this means to leave it alone, or can I restart to continue it or will that stop the whole process? I've read about both happening to people in this situation, so I'm not sure how to proceed.

I've also read about how kb3112343 is necessary(?) or at least recommended to have BEFORE installing Win 10 (too late). I don't have this installed. Does it matter? Incidentally, I tried downloading it on Firefox and it took me to the downloaded page, but there was no file. I had to use IE to download it. Strange...

Also, none of the screenshots in the installation guide earlier in this thread match what I've been staring at for the last 24+ hours:

Can I now clean install Windows 10 without going through the upgrade first step?

yes, on win 8, i never play around the power options, and when i install win 10, i also never play around the power options, but on win 8, i never have this issue, only on win 10.

no high cpu usage, no hangs, slowing, etc.

so it's strange, like i said before, that it drains my battery but when i had my win8, it never happened.

I have trolled around the web and found others with this issue. A result of the Win 10 upgrade.

Installing the latest drivers doesn't help.

Most likely the registry contains some corrupt item caused by the upgrade which is left hanging around.

Unless someone comes up with a full deinstall utility for all of the registry entries the only other resolution is to do a full rebuild of the machine. Buying a non Microsoft keyboard may be another way around it as it will do a fresh install of its own
drivers.

I will have to live with it I suppose.

Since it looks like you really just want Windows 10 and not concerned about the Windows 7, I would suggest you follow this procedure to get a clean install of Windows 10 done using your current Windows 7 license:

Hi Navy, thanks for your feedback. One main issue I don't know how to get around is that I can't get to the site where the 'download tool now' button is located. The link provided just takes me to a blank page on all the browsers I have. The only other link that provides a Win 10 install is How to Upgrade to Windows 10 - Microsoft and that only has 'upgrade for free' which when clicked begins the download and installation process automatically, so I don't even have the option to get to the 'Windows 10 Setup -- What do you want to do?' stage in which I can then choose 'create installation media for another PC'. Suggestions? Thanks.

Edit: none of the three methods work for me, not direct DL from MS Tech Bench (page does not exist), not DL using a MCT (blank page), not DL from Insider Preview ISO from MS (page does not exist).

 

p.s. Also, I have dl'd SP1, but there are I assume many more updates that have yet to be installed for Win 7. I've been trying to DL them for DAYS (still waiting...). However, when I went a few days ago to the MS site of the address listed above, and got Win 10, it just started downloading and installing normally. Can I assume I shouldn't bother with the rest of the Win 7 updates, or is not having all of them something that is possibly hanging my installation at 99% complete? Thanks.

 

The lack of Windows 7 updates should not be stopping the Windows 10 upgrade.

 

Thanks, Navy, but what should I do about the fact that none of the three methods listed in the link for a clean Win 10 install work for getting a Win 10 ISO?

 

I didn't see a working link for the Media Creation Tool to download and start the whole process, so I browsed around and found one here:

And PowerISO latest free version works fine to get through the process of making a DVD on Win 7 (It seems the create an ISO tutorial is uses Win 8).

 

Ok, so I did it, but instead of doing a clean install, I tried doing it using the Windows 10 ISO created through MCT in the link above, and followed the instructions here: Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums

I have created a Win 10 bootable DVD and a Genuine Ticket in case I need to ever do a clean install, but it's just a relief to finally get past any hang ups. The Win 10 ISO from the file itself was relatively quick and smooth, no hang ups (just need a net and graphics driver since I chose to do updates later). Due to an ethernet driver issue that prevented net connection after the ISO upgrade, I decided to do a clean install after all, and just wanted to say thanks very much for the brilliant tutorials that led the way to creating the DVD and the genuine ticket, guiding through the installation process of both. Everything is finally running very smoothly *Biggrin

p.s. In case this happens to anyone else, I wanted to add that during the process of searching for the Genuine Ticket folder in File Explorer, the tutorial states to look for is using %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket. However, I got 'no folder found' with that prompt. Instead, I went with what popped up as I was typing above - %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC and pressed enter and there was the Genuine Ticket folder.
