    i am trying to copy all of my cds into the laptop so that i have the all in one place, and canswitch the songs around and make other cds

    Open Windows Media Player, insert a disc, set desired Rip Settings then click Rip CD:

    You could never just copy music files from CD and just let play from other place. Old .cda files are not like that. Only if it's in other formats like . MP3 etc.
