Windows 10: Getting OEM binded with a used motherboard, is it legal?

- I got win 10 home activated without asking for a key. I made a custom PC and bought a used motherboardASUS H81M seperatelyI didn't bought and modify a branded PC. - Also, does it depends upon good hardware getting better edition or it is a fixed edition by manufacturer? - As told its used, is it legal for me to use the oem key used by another person before?- Also I don't really know if the motherboard had an original oem key or it was bought online and binded with it. I am just thinking. Nobody told me if it had an online illegally bought key

It is not legal. OEM key is tied to the motherboard and can not be used on another motherboard.

I am doubtful whether those keys will work. They might expire after some time and you will land into troubles.

Activation depends on what type of license you have:

If it came preinstalled with the computer, that is called an OEM version. For an OEM license, the license remove as soon as Motherboard is not working. So basically,it is non-transferable. If that is the case you need to get a new license.

If its the free upgrade from a retail store,it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

If its the free upgrade from a OEM preinstalled Windows license, it is NOT transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

However, this is not same for retail licenses.

Example: You purchased the license through Microsoft store. That does carry transfer rights.

To activate your Windows:

Run the activation troubleshooter on the new device using the below steps:

Go to Settings>Update and security>Activation and run the troubleshooter. and select I recently changed hardware on this device.
