    Getting sound with a VM

So , after trying unsuccessfully to get sound to the VM using Hyper V and Win10 as the host machine, and making sure I activated remote desktop services and Enhanced Session mode in Hyper-V, I still get no sound on the VM machine. I installed Win XP as the VM because I wanted to enjoy some old video games that stopped support around the XP days. So I got XP to install as the OS with Hyper-V OK, but get no sound , which pretty much kills it for game playing, music listening, etc . I then found out that for whatever goofy reason, MS can't support sound in its OWN software on the VM any older that Windows 8.1! Bummer...So, does anyone have any suggestions for virtualization management software that doesn't consider sound to be an 'enhancement' rather than a necessity and/or make it very easy to get it working in XP on the virtual machine, with Win10 as my main system? Thanks.

    :)

Elimination of Windows Media Center in Windows 10

I've just installed a copy of Vista home premium as a VM and set up my Hauppage usb tuner, the only problem is the sound is slightly out of sync with the film (very annoying).

While the VM is running I just connected the tuner, it connected to the VM and I installed drivers as normal from the CD.

It's still not a perfect answer though.

    Random Notification sound, reason unknown

Are you sure it's an email? Have you a different notification sound than your other events (texts/IM, VM, etc).

I occasionally get beeps from my phone if the charger lead isn't in properly (I get a connect/disconnect tone).

    Getting sound with a VM

    Hi there

Use VBOX or VMWARE player (both free) I'd go for VMWARE player - for things like sound / usb support / installable drivers etc I'd use these rather than hyper-V as integration is easier - also you can run these programs as well on Windows HOME (you don't need PRO which HYPER-V requires).

After install run VBOX additions or VMware tools (from the VM after ist boot-- only needs to be done once). Before you run the additions or tools program you'll probably only have something like VGA resolution -- video and audio will be fine after running.

Mine works fine on W10 Pro laptop -- even runs an old Minidisc audio system perfectly !!! Has no problem with attaching network drives either if you need to share files with HOST or rest of your LAN. I'd though insulate XP VM's from the Internet though due to security -- my NAS server acts as a gateway so I keep the XP VM off the Internet although I can share files.

Further issue with using RDC -- protocol will be much slower than using the programs as I've outlined above - especially if the VM is on the same physical machine as your Host OS - makes decent Video (especially on large screens) and audio streams far better than slow RDC protocol which HYPER-V uses. RDC will only go at Network speed (max) and if you are on a typical Wifi network -- well you know the rest when working with large files.

    Cheers

I've heard of VMWARE and actually now that I remember, I tried VBox and couldn't get sound to work there either, but don't remember why, so I uninstalled it.....I will give VMWARE a go, because I do want the fastest performance possible (for the game, but also for other things......like I'm wanting to try out this NComputing thin client box I got used off ebay for 9 bux lol.... I have a 2nd pc/keyboard/mouse for that and I'm really interested in experimenting with it all.

I'm running Win 10 pro 64 bit, btw

    Hi there

    @guitz.

VMware player link It's free for non commercial use i.e home etc.

Download VMware Workstation Player | VMware

Sound works fine with VMWARE --remember after ist boot of the VM you have to run Install VMware tools (from INSIDE the VM).

I think the XP VM uses an "emulated Sound Blaster" type of sound (XP supports those) -- you shouldn't need to install a driver. Actually the mixer etc is far better than the bog standard volume control on W10 !!! On the XP mixer you can adjust Right / Left and select input devices. W10 standard "mixer" is a load of dogs mess.

    Cheers

RDC speed is only limited by network speed (WiFi for example) if you are connecting from another machine. If you are connecting via RDC to a Hyper-V VM on the same PC it uses the internal switch.

This will be reported as a 10Gbps connection (or whatever your NIC reports) but this is not a limit. The connection will run as fast as your PC hardware allows. There is no transfer through the network outside the PC if RDC client and VM are on same PC. In fact to isolate XP from internet you'd probably want to use a private switch anyway which would disallow this.

Running on same PC I can't tell any performance difference between RDC and console.

I also use RDC from my phone to my home PC to do inventory management in some game I'm playing when I'm on the bus. That is pretty terribly slow but it passes the time...

If I was you I'd try it with RDC (seeing as you have XP already installed on Hyper-V) and see if it is OK.

If not sound should work on either VMWare or VBox. Both work and I use both but I never paid much attention to the sound quality to be honest.

I wouldn't know how to setup RDC ...seems to me already having Hyper V and XP installed...how/where/what why would RDC be doing? What would be the step by step to get that to work? ...I always thought RDC was for a 2nd pc anyway and not the one single one that virtual XP is running on?

    Getting sound with a VM

Does anyone know what I may need to set now, in the VM XP ?...ipconfig shows nothing...I have the virtual switch in Hyper V External 'Realtek PCI Family'....So now I have two problems...no sound and no internet in the VM LOL...And once I get the internet figured out on the VM XP machine, then I guess I should figure out how to get it connected via RDC...right now, it just gives me an error and says it can't find any workgroup, or something like that..

Edit: progress! ipconfig in the VM XP machine is now populated ! Still can't ping to anything nor http, but at least the VM is getting IP info from the host it appears...

I did go back and follow that and everything worked great!...However, I've since logged off and back on , and now again have to no sound....I found a procedure on the internet about going into the registry and having to manually turn something on , 0 to 1...forgot what that was lol...anyway, I'll keep playing with it.
