Windows 10: "Getting Windows Ready Don't turn off your computer" goes on forever

Hi,

I bought my father a new desktop computer this christmas - Lenovo IdeaCentre 510S (so it has Windows 10, and as far as I know it has all the latest updates to it's os after I set it up). And it has been working until this morning when it apparently started to update itself, and according to my parents there has been a blue screen with "Getting Windows Ready Don't turn off your computer" on it since 9 am - it's now 15 pm.

I've turned the computer off and on again and the screen goes blank, then a swirly thing appears at the bottom while the screen is still black and it goes straight into the blue screen of annoyance. I can't even get into the safe mode despite pressing often F8.

I've googled and googled and nothing else works!



What can I do??? (and I need simple, step-by-step instructions please)

Rather than do anything that might void the warranty I would contact the store or manufacturer and explain what has happened. They should be able to give you directions on how to restore it.

If it was you that set it up then simply use or create a recovery disk and perform a system restore or return to previous build. See the following tutorial for help:

You will need to use option 1 and step 1 will tell you to boot to advanced startup options. Follow the link in step 1 to open up the tutorial to see how to do this and you will need to use options 4,5 or 6 for your situation.

 

I bought the computer from a store, so it's brand new and no other "previous Windows" on it, and also there's absolutely no way to get into this "Advanced Startup options" as F8 doesn't work - and I just googled and saw that apparently now it's supposedly hold in shift while pressing F8 multiple times (whereas I thought it had always been enough to just press F8 multiple times while the computer is starting up)


This computer has Intel - is there any update recently from Microsoft that totally and utterly bricks the computer?

 

If you read my previous reply you will see that you have to use either a recovery drive (option 4), an installation USB (option 5) or trick the PC into recovery mode by starting it three times in quick succession (option 6) to get into the advanced startup options.

 

It is likely trying to install this Update from last week - Cumulative Update KB4056892 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.192 Read thru and you will see there were numerous issues if 3rd Party antivirus was not disabled or with Intel processors with the potential security flaw recently discovered.

If the desktop can't get to Log-in screen, try this - when you power on, as soon as display lights up, unplug the power cord. Repeat this two more times and you should be taken to Advanced Startup options on the third failed try. From there, you can try Startup Repair, System Restore, if enabled, or Safe Mode. If you can get it started again, retry the Windows Update from Settings or download link in News post in paragraph 1 after disabling 3rd party AV and unplugging all usb devices except keyboard and mouse. If not, I would take back to store, as Philc suggested. Good Luck and keep us updated.

Didn't think it would work since every thing else had failed miserably! I did what you said, luckily there was one 'time point' in system restore and then I completely uninstalled that 3rd party anti-virus from McAfee that came with the darn computer. Then restarted and updated again; and I've been seeing the KB405692 thingy is trying to install itself again for many minutes and it's stuck on 100%, which is weird (and yet I've restarted the computer a few times now), and a lot of other updates are waiting to be installed but can't; but as long as my father's computer works then I couldn't care less.

*Party The McAfee is likely a trial version that was bundled with the computer that you will ultimately either have to pay to continue using or uninstall, so I would just use Windows Defender for now, which most find perfectly adequate, easy to use and free.

Let the KB405692 update try to install in the background and maybe after the next shutdown, it will finish upon restart but you can try to run the Troubleshooter/Windows Update in Settings/Update & Security section in the meantime to see if it finds any issues. Also, try disabling Fast Startup in Control Panel/Power Options/System Settings/Change settings that are currently unavailable. It is known to cause issues to save a few seconds of boot time (I permanently disable it on all computers that I support by turning off Hibernation via Command prompt). Enjoy.
