    Ghost user account

For anybody else experiencing this issue- it may also be due to an automatic sign in issue.

    --CAUSE--

The "invalid password screen" is caused when you have set your user to automatically sign in to windows, and you change your password.

    --SOLUTION--

    1. Open "netplwiz" from the run command

    2. Click on the checkbox that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"

    3. Restart machine and see if your problem has been solved!

    Ghost user account

I have just upgraded from Windows 7 where I had a problem with a ghost user account. I hoped the upgrade would solve it but instead is has got worse. Every time the computer goes to sleep I have to restart the computer or the login says invalid password
even though there is only one user. I have told the computer to stay awake for now, but that is not ideal.

    Anyone have any ideas please?

Hello Cesar, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

It sounds like you may have set Windows to automatically sign in to your account at startup using netplwiz, but may have entered the password incorrectly or changed the password or computer name afterwards. This could cause what you are seeing.

If you wanted to automatically sign in, then go through netplwiz to set it up again.

If not, then make sure the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box is checked.

Sign in User Account Automatically at Windows 10 Startup

Here is the quick and easy answer. In my case I have 1 user, which is my Microsoft Linked account. I have it set to autologon without a password. I hate passwords.
    Solution was.
Go to start, button right click. Left click on Run.
type in netplwiz and press enter.
The box pops up, and you have the 1 entry and all looks good.
However, click on that entry and then click Properties button.
Now you will see that your username is there but without the @Outlook.com (or whatever email you used). Thats how the ghost user got there, if you ever accidentally forgot to put in the full email address. Just fix that.
Now check ON the box that says user must enter password. Click APPLY not OK.
Now Uncheck the box that says user must enter password.
Click OK and it will ask you to enter the password twice.

Now shutdown windows. Then turn on computer, it will now boot past the login screen and right to the desktop.

The problem seems to be when you either Lost your internet during the boot process
Or that you typed in your username without the @xxxxx,.yyy part.
And or maybe forgot the password. Windows then tries to offer to let you use a local account. Even if you remove the local account, it still seems to remember it. But it never shows up. Maybe someday Microsoft will fiix this. Its still however Today a problem.
