  1. Ghosting icon on start menu when dragging and dropping into a group

I upgraded windows 10 today. Finally getting around to organizing my start menu because I mostly use the search feature to open my applications. I started to drag icons around and put them in groups when one of the icons seems to be stuck in a drag and drop state. Ghosting the icon. Its rendered the start menu useless. I can't do anything from the start menu once this has happened.

  2. Windows 10 - Start Menu Drag & Drop Icons

I am running Wndows 10 on HP All in One PC and until last weekend all was well. Now I cannot drap and drop icons in the start menu. If I try to drag it to a different location on the Start Menu it disappears but the program shows it being stilled pinned
to the Start Menu. If I Unpin and repin and then restart the computer the icon reappears in a different location. Any suggestion as to how to resolve this? I tried recovery at an earlier point but that did not succeed.

Drag-and-drop “Pin to Start Menu” doesn’t work

    I have a brand-new Surface Pro 4.

When I drag a shortcut to the Windows icon, the “Pin to Start Menu”
message appears and I drop the shortcut on the Windows icon, but absolutely nothing happens.

When I bring up the context menu for the program, and click “Pin to start”, nothing happens, including after a reboot.

I have also tried going through the list of ALL apps and the program I’m trying to pin does not show in the list, perhaps because it is just an executable that I downloaded to my computer.

Or is there another way to add an item to the Start Menu? I tried adding the shortcut to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs, but when I rebooted the shortcut was still not in the start menu.

I then decided to get clever and search for folders named “Start Menu”. Then Windows Search decided to show me folders that supposedly had such a subfolder, but did not.

At this point, I was no longer amused and I need to ask for help.

Is there something else I need to do? I had no trouble just doing it drag-and-drop on another Windows 10 PC.

  4. Ghosting icon on start menu when dragging and dropping into a group

    Drag and Drop

    Hi Charles,

the steps you suggested didn't work for me but, when pressing the escape key it somehow expanded the drive and by using drag and drop to the single file in the list worked.

In the past I could drag and drop multiple folders onto the drive on the network computer(s). Doing it on individual folders will take far too long and time consuming and is not an option.

Microsoft should be able to identify what is blocking it and issue a fix.

My machine is multi boot so tomorrow I will try with Windows 7.

    Many thanks for your help,
