How do I search for a Gmail email on Drive D: ?

Gmail exists only in the cloud. You can't run Gmail from a local drive. All your Gmail email is stored in the cloud.

To search for a Gmail email, open Gmail (from any internet-connected computer regardless of the operating system) and type your search term into Gmail's search box.

  5. I don't know what is happening but it said that this brower does not accept notifacations and I need to download chrome which I did but that didn't help. Also the post you sent to me was in Chrome and I could not reply. I do not want to use chrome as a default brower.

You can give Gmail Notifier Plus a go. I used it back in Windows 7 days but haven't used it in Windows 10 so I'm not sure how it will perform.

I join and log in and it's like using a space ship to get across the street. This is something I don't understand. All I want to do is get a notice when I get email. I have live mail which my ISP screw up for me and that is why I'm going to Gmail. Live mail give you a notice every time you get email but Gmail seem like pulling teeth to get a notice.

Maybe I didn't post right. How can you tell if you have a new email that just came into your Gmail account sitting in your inbox? I don't want to open my Gmail 10 time because I'm expecting a certain email?

    Hi:

Sorry, but as I asked in your other thread, we need to know what browser you are using (Firefox, IE, Edge, Chrome, Opera, etc)??
It's possible that only certain browsers support "desktop notifications".
It's possible that the "desktop notifications" feature for gmail requires one to use Chrome -- that would not surprise me, given that gmail is Google and Chrome is Google.

But we cannot suggest an add-on for your browser (as another means to accomplish the same thing), unless we know what browser you use.

I do not understand what that means.
I do not even have Chrome installed on any of my computers.
    Sorry.

    >>I mean no disrespect, but it's going to become VERY confusing for everyone to try to resolve this simultaneously in multiple different venues (both here and at bleeping).
    >>I respectfully suggest that you consider picking one venue or the other at one time.
    >>Doing so may make this less confusing, more efficient and less stressful for you.

    Thanks,
    MM

  9. Yep.
I have no personal experience with that add-on on any platform, but I did provide a link to it in his other thread as one possibility, if @lostsoul65 uses Firefox.

    Good idea.

    Thanks,
    MM

  10. I'm using Internet Explorer 11.
I guess I'm not posting correctly.
Here is my question: If I have email in my inbox on my Gmail account how do I know it's there because I don't want to open my browers 20 time to check to see if it came in. On live mail you are notified.

  11. Gmail is a webmail service, not an installed program on your computer.
It cannot, by itself, "out-of-the-box" notify you when you have new messages.

The user accesses emails EITHER through a web browser OR through an email client (which is a mail handling program the user installs on the computer, such as Thunderbird or Outlook or another, similar program).
    Or
, you can try the "desktop notifications" (which MIGHT require installing Chrome, I am not sure).
    Or
you can try installing an add-on for Firefox as both @swarfega (here) and I (at bleeping) suggested, if you use Firefox. (I do not know if IE or Edge offers similar add-ons or features).

So, no, unfortunately, as we tried to explain in your other threads at bleeping, AFAIK "gmail" cannot automatically tell you when you have new messages, unless you set up one or more of the following:

    • Desktop notifications (see the link in your bleeping thread)
    • Add-ons for Firefox, such as gmail notifier + (see the links in the reply by @swarfega)
    • An email client (such as Outlook or Thunderbird) in which you set up your gmail account to send/receive messages
I understand that you are tired and frustrated. I would be, too.
Perhaps it might be good to take a break from all this for a while and to clear your head.
Then, come back and perhaps print out the replies here and at bleeping.
Take your time to read them over.
Then try one option at a time.

Another thought: perhaps a friend, neighbor or family member might be able to help?

That's all I've got for now.
Perhaps someone else has better advice.

  12. Hi:

I have to attend to my "day job" work.
This is my last gasp for now. *Wink

Thanks for that info. So, we can set aside any Firefox add-on suggestions, as you do not use Firefox.
And we can set aside "desktop notifications", as that might require using Chrome, which you also do not use.

    WLM is an apple.
    Gmail is an orange.

WLM (Windows Live Mail) is (was) an EMAIL CLIENT (i.e. a software program installed on your computer to manage emails). See:

    Email Client

GMAIL is a WEBMAIL PROVIDER. It is not an installed email client or an installed program. It is a web-based service. See:

    Webmail Provider

Since you do not use Firefox and you do not use Chrome, the options for you are somewhat limited.
Someone else will correct me if I am wrong.
I **think** that there is only one feasible way you can be notified on your computer "automatically" of incoming gmail messages, with your setup, your browser (IE).
That would be to install a new email client to replace the now-defunct WLM. See:

    Comparison of email clients

There are several fine choices, both free and paid. You may already have MS Outlook installed on your computer.
That is an email client. It can be configured to receive/send messages to/from gmail, AND to notify you when new messages arrive.
You would need to choose the one you want and (other than Outlook) install it and then configure it.

    Does that make sense?

    MM

P.S. Actually, I have one more possible solution. It does involve an excellent, free, third-party software program that I have used on many, many computers over the years and that I still use today. It is actually designed as a "spam-filtering" program, but it would do what you want, as well.
However, before diving down another rabbit hole about it, I'd prefer to get caught up on the basics, first.

  14. Hi:

Yes, we have been over that point at least a few times already both here and at bleeping.*Smile
(I have used Thunderbird with gmail, with yahoo! mail, with ISP mail and with Exchange mail for many years on my own systems.)

But it does not hurt to reinforce the valid point.*Smile

    Thanks,
    MM
