Windows 10: Good software to synchronize PC files and external HDD ?

TLDR at the end.

Hello, I'm searching a software for Windows 10 to backup my files in a HDD.

Cloud is not an option because I have 500 GB of files on my PC. I have an external HDD where I can backup my data (there is enough space on it).

So here is what I want to do. I have a unique (big) folder on my PC which contains all my files. Every week, I want to backup this folder on my HDD. Currently, I delete the folder on my HDD and I copy it again from PC to HDD. But this takes too much time: it would be much better to synchronize the HDD folder with the PC folder by copying only the modified files.

In Windows, I can copy a folder named 'foo' (let's call it folder A) into a folder named 'bar', even if the folder named 'bar' contains another folder named 'foo' (call it folder B, this folder B is an old version of folder A): only the files that have different names in the folder A will be copied in the folder B. But there are two problems:

- The old files in folder B that I deleted in folder A will stay in folder B

- The modified filed but with the same name will not be copied

So in the end the folders A and B will not be the same.

Can you see what I mean ? It's not well explained, sorry.

TLDR + conclusion: is there a software that synchronizes two folders but without copying again the unchanged files ?

• Have you made any recent changes on your computer prior to the issue?
• Which driver did you uninstall? Have you reinstall the driver? If yes, how did you reinstall the driver?
• Have you check if the external HDD is visible in Device Manager?

External HDD or Internal HDD?

I'm contemplating whether or not if I should purchase a external hard drive for saving all of my work, music, photo's backup etc, instead of saving it on my pc hd. Now the problem is external hdd vs internal hdd's longevity, hardware differences, file corruption typically on external hdd's or flash drives. Is it a mistake saving personal stuff separate from the pc or are ex hdd as good as internal? I've had experiences loosing my stuff because of viruses, hdd failure and lack of prior experience not partitioning my hdd *Smile
