Windows 10: Google AI Quantum computing takes a leap forward over supercomputers

Quantum computing: It sounds futuristic because until recently, it was. But today we’re marking a major milestone in quantum computing research that opens up new possibilities for this technology.

Unlike classical computing, which runs everything from your cell phone to a supercomputer, quantum computing is based on the properties of quantum mechanics. As a result, quantum computers could potentially solve problems that would be too difficult or even impossible for classical computers—like designing better batteries, figuring out what molecules might make effective medicines or minimizing emissions from the creation of fertilizer. They could also help improve existing advanced technologies like machine learning.

Today, the scientific journal Nature has published the results of Google’s efforts to build a quantum computer that can perform a task no classical computer can; this is known in the field as “quantum supremacy.” In practical terms, our chip, which we call Sycamore, performed a computation in 200 seconds that would take the world’s fastest supercomputer 10,000 years.

This achievement is the result of years of research and the dedication of many people. It’s also the beginning of a new journey: figuring out how to put this technology to work. We’re working with the research community and have open sourced tools to enable others to work alongside us to identify new applications. Google quantum computing breakthrough by year end

The company is currently testing a quantum processor more than twice as powerful as its previously announced chip, and claims it will be ready by the end of 2017.

Google's quantum AI lab is testing a 20-qubit processor that has a two-qubit fidelity of 99.5 per cent, a measure of how many errors the chip makes.

And the company claims it will have a working 49-qubit chip by the end of the year.

The technology firm previously only publicly confirmed it has achieved a nine-qubit machine, built in 2015.

To beat conventional machines, in what scientists call 'quantum supremacy', the new chip will need to have a two-qubit fidelity of at least 99.7 per cent.

This margin of error has to be corrected before functioning quantum computers can be built.

Alan Ho, an engineer in Google's quantum AI lab, revealed the company's progress at a quantum computing conference in Munich, according to reports in New Scientist.

Intel Starts Testing Smallest ‘Spin Qubit’ Chip for Quantum Computing

My understanding is that future quantum computers will not be able to perform all tasks faster than today's supercomputers, but there are many tasks that they will be able to perform exponentially faster.

Also, to utilize the fact that subatomic particles can be in multiple quantum states simultaneously, all measurements must be made indirectly. If direct measurements are made, a quantum computer won't have any advantage over a traditional computer.

They will be great for communication and encryption.

Also because a qubit holds 3 states, the wil be used as part of AI that need to make fast decision where many possibilities need to be computed.

But a quantum computer will only be a backend, because a normal computer will be needed to output and translate the data.
