    That's good news from Google - but presumably their patch only provides protection when browsing in Chrome and not against other Spectre attack vectors.

    Win 10 security update for Spectre virus freezes computers??

    P.S. My laptop that has the download available has an Intel Pentium, but the PC that has an AMD has not been used for awhile, so it is not on.

    I noted that in the first article I posted that some Intel machines have been slowed down by the update.

    my dell desktop with I5 processor went in Automatic Repair mode and failed with inaccessible boot device.

    Yep, my work i5 Dell desktop PC wouldn't boot this morning either, showing the same "inaccessible boot device". Google claims to have a Spectre fix that doesn’t slow down PCs :(

    I used DISM to uninstall the rollup that includes the spectre fix and, although this worked at first, the update seemed to reinstall later today. My PC is bricked again and DISM now claims it can't uninstall "permanent packages"!

    In the article they do say "In sharing our research publicly, we hope that this can be universally deployed to improve the cloud experience industry-wide.” So I assume it will be available as a fix to Microsoft and CPU makers.

    We might find out one day for how long the intelligence agencies have been aware of these vulnerabilities and been exploiting them. A cynic might argue the agencies were complicit in designing in the vulnerabilities.
