  1. Google Desktop won't work after computer reset. Working fine before.

After a number of things not working as wanted and my XPS 8700 running slower and slower I went for the 'reset' option in Windows 10 Home. (I had forgotten how much work it is to reinstall all the programs I like to use.) Everything works fine except for Google Desktop. It appears to install OK, however it will not open a browser window to show any results.

This program was working just fine on Windows 10 before the reset so I don't know what that changed to suddenly make it incompatible.

I have several external USB drives attached to my Dell running constantly. Google Desktop never had any problem searching and indexing all drives and reporting results pretty fast. Now I can't access the setting to tell it what to index. The search box comes up but it won't open a browser window or tab to show any results.

I've already tried several supposed fixes including one registry hack which did work to set the indexing preferences, however that had no effect on the program's inability to open the browser window or tab to show search results. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled it trying different settings choices on the install window, about a dozen times by now. Even tried the "Windows 7 compatibility" setting in troubleshooting.

Having a great indexing and search function that doesn't eat all my computer's resources is important. I'd even pay for one if it was as good as Google Desktop was when it was working. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve this issue. Thanks.

    :)

Adding my own reply/comment, I've noticed that Thunderbird doesn't run right either since the reset. It's taken to hanging up and having to be restarted. I never had trouble with that app in the past. What are the chances that the "reset" didn't do a good job of restoring the computer to it's original state? Should I try to go through it all over again hoping for better results? Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi, reset (which I've never done personally) removes all programs and settings and lets you keep files or not as you choose.

You can try to get Windows running smoothly, or you could do a clean install.

Considering the former and noting you originally said things were running more slowly.
    1. Check your disk
    a. Download and run Crystal Diskinfo and post the result- it gives a clear good/caution/bad result.
    b. If that's ok, then
    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

    2. Check Windows file integrity
If clear or fixed, then from an elevated (admin) command prompt run
    sfc /scannow
    and report the result.

BTW, Leo's tips helped me get to the results but the procedure was slightly different in Win 10 than what he described for 7 and 8.
This log says it found some errors and fixed them. What does that mean in regards to programs running correctly?

Hi, I assume Crystal Diskinfo reported your disk as Good.

So your Windows installation and disk are ok, which is great.

Which is your default browser? I've just installed GDS on mine (long time since I've seen that) and it opens normally in Firefox. Is your browser correctly set to handle all its defaults? (See control panel, default programs).

I also use Tbird, which runs ok.
Have you tried Tbird safe mode?

You could try uninstalling, reinstalling it.

  9. I've been using Chrome since Firefox started crashing at least once a day, about six months ago. Yes, my system looks to be in perfect working order according to all those tests. I've decided to reset Windows 10 again, this time saving nothing so I should get a clean install. I'll let you know if that solves the problem with Google Desktop. Thanks for your suggestions.

Reset isn't the same as a clean install... a clean install would mean removing everything in the registry (compared to a reset) and would start from an earlier build, with the latest cumulative update applied.

Firefox (32 bits) - are you using the 64 bit version? hasn't crashed. Given your issues with FF & Tbird, there's sthg wrong, so I'd suggest, as you're prepared to do a reset, that you do a clean install instead.

  11. Since this computer came with Windows 10 pre-installed and I don't have any kind of installation disc, how can I do a clean install without any media to do the installation?

Many people ask this question. A quick search yields a very easy answer. There's also a tutorial on how to get a Windows iso or create bootable media in the Tutorial section - search for iso.

  13. Google Desktop won't work after computer reset. Working fine before.

Wikipedia says "In September 2011, Google announced it would discontinue a number of its products, including Google Desktop. The reason given was that "In the last few years, there’s been a huge shift from local to cloud-based storage and computing, as well as the integration of search and gadget functionality into most modern operating systems. People now have instant access to their data, whether online or offline. As this was the goal of Google Desktop, the product will be discontinued".

It sounds like it's time to leave Google Desktop behind.

If it meets larrydonline 's needs, it is still functional. The only comparable products I'm aware of are commercial (X1, Copernic). And it was the only one that came with a plugin to OCR image based pdf's for example.

But GDS isn't his only issue, so the focus isn't primarily that.

Windows search can index textual content; then there are the well-known freeware indexing tools that do not index content:
    Ultrasearch
    Locate32
    Everything (v1.4b) or better

  15. You have it backwards.
It is not functional, therefore it does not meet his needs! *Smile
