Windows 10: Google Voice now available to make and receive calls in Gmail

Quick launch summary

Google Voice is now available in Gmail when using Chrome or Firefox browsers on your computer. This allows you to make and receive calls without switching tabs. Google Voice in Gmail looks similar to the call panel in the Voice web application, allowing you to answer calls, make new outbound calls, and easily transfer calls.

In addition, you can now transfer calls using the Google Voice mobile and web apps. In a few simple steps, you can send a call to the appropriate person, whether thatâs an intelligently-suggested contact, searching in your directory or a manually entered phone number.

Call transferring is available in Voice on Android, iOS, and the web.

Getting started

Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.

End users: These features will be available to Voice customers by default. Visit the Help Center to learn more about transferring calls or using Google Voice in Gmail.

Need help with Google Voice

I didn't know where to put this question, but since it's a service provided by Google, I thought I'd start here.

I signed up for Google Voice. I have a phone # established with them. I wanted to just make calls without one, but I couldn't even get the Call option until I got a Google number.

When I try making calls it just hangs then goes back to showing the Connect button. I can't find any thorough support for this on the web or via phone. There's only simple step by step instructions on how to get a number and make calls, which I've already followed.

I have had a friend test my Google Voice number and CAN get calls on it. I haven't any Contacts in my Gmail account. Do I need to establish Contacts for everyone I call? It doesn't say you have to in the Google Voice instructions.

Does anyone know why this is happening or of any troubleshooting guides on it or tech support that is actually useful?

Managed to make some calls via setting it to use my Home Phone vs Google Talk, but I don't know it that will still be a free service if dialing outside my area. The headset I bought is useless so far though since I can't seem to get Google Talk to work.

I do have Google Talk updated to the new Hangouts software btw.

When Google Voice was offered during beta testing, Gmail Labs offered an add-on so users could listen to their voicemails in their Gmail inbox.[37] Since August 26, 2010, U.S. Gmail users may place calls to the U.S., Canada, and international destinations from within Gmail.[38] Calls to U.S. and Canadian phone numbers are free, while calls to international destinations cost as low as 2 cents per minute.[39] This is possible with the help of a voice and video chat plugin that users download and install so their browsers can take advantage of cameras, microphones, and speakers installed in the computer.[40] If the user has a Google Voice account, the account phone number is used as caller identification relayed to the destination.

Google Voice - Wikipedia

The Google Call feature is Google Voice, but included with Gmail. It's a US only service at the moment. People in the US can call anyone else in the US and Canada free of charge, but have to pay to call anyone else internationally.

We’re rolling out this feature to U.S. based Gmail users over the next few days, so you’ll be ready to get started once “Call Phones” shows up in your chat list (you will need to install the voice and video plug-in if you haven’t already). If you’re using Google Apps for your school or business, then you won’t see it quite yet. We’re working on making this available more broadly - so stay tuned!

Quick Google Voice question

Hey all, it's been a while. I'm sure many of you have used Google Voice, so hopefully you can answer this question for me. If someone has my gmail address as a contact, is there any way they can see that I'm using Google Voice or see my Google Voice number? I'm trying to catch someone doing something, and used Google Voice. They have my Gmail address...I looked all through my account and I couldn't find anywhere where it showed the two together. Thanks.
