GPT Protective Partition. Moved 6TB SATA drive from Windows 7 64 bit to Window 10 64 bit

    Hi

I hope someone can help me.

I have a Western Digital Black 6TB SATA hard drive that has been formatted as a single large partition with GPT on a 64 bit Windows 7 PC. It is not a boot drive.

I want to move the drive to different PC which has 64 bit Windows 10.

However, on the Windows 10 PC's Disk Management console, the drive is showing one partition as 2049GB GPT Protective Partition, and 3541.03GB unallocated. Thankfully, when I put the drive back in the original PC, everything still works fine.

I've read that the GPT Protective Partition can happen when moving from 32 to 64 bit systems, but both of my systems are 64 bit.

The motherboard on the second PC is an Asus P5K-E/WiFi-AP. It's BIOS drivers are up to date although the most recent release was in 2009. The motherboard's manual shows that the SATA connectors are Intel ICH9R. I have run the Intel Driver & Support Assistant and this suggests there are no software updates available.

Using the app "Drive Controller Info", it shows shows that "Standard SATA AHCI Controller 10.0.17134.1" is being used. I believe this is a standard Windows driver, and this is apparently up to date.

Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong?

    Many thanks

    David

Windows 7 OEM move from 32-bit to 64-bit

I have a Dell Vostro 3700 laptop running OEM 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I have the 32-bit disks but not 64-bit disks. I would like to move up to a 64-bit operating system. I believe the i5-560M CPU supports 64-bit processing. I cannot download a 64-bit
version of Windows 7 Home Premium from Microsoft any more. Can I:

    • Reserve and install a 32-bit version of Windows 10.
    • Then download a 64-bit version of Windows 10 from Microsoft for free and activate with my current product key.
