Windows 10: GPT vs MBR

Discus and support GPT vs MBR in Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware to solve the problem; Ok I hate to do this, but, seems I may have been wrong about Macrium Refect. I did 2 image backups this morning. 1st one I used my Acronis 2016, took... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware' started by OldMike65, Sep 17, 2015.

    GPT vs MBR

OldMike - think about it this way - the MSR is NOT a partition - it's unallocated space. You only have 3 partitions with something on them. Acronis no doubt is only looking to back up your partitions with data - I assume it would place those in the same position those 3 are on your disk but haven't used it in years. Macrium is showing you a map of your entire disk, including unallocated space, offering to back up the entire DISK and keeping track of exactly where unallocated space is.

That's why in prior conversation I said your clean install would give you 3 partitions and an MSR.

I don't think you necessarily have a problem with Acronis or that it has a problem seeing GPT disks correctly - it's just a matter of understanding how it's representing things to you. I would hope that Acronis is capable of doing a full disk image and then restoring it to exactly what was imaged across the entire disk, either by default or with proper settings.

Well you might be right Word Man, but from my past experience using Acronis, if it don't see a partition, then doing a restore it will only restore what it reports it saw during the backup. Of course the only way to actually find out, is to restore that image I made. Which at this point, I have no interest in testing that theory right now.

Then it won't restore anything because there is no 4th partition and nothing to restore. MiniTool and Macrium see any unallocated space (like your MSR) and show it though.

Well then if your right, Acronis would restore that partition. I did a verify after and it passed 100% .
On another note, I looked at your pic of drive c and saw that you have a 450mg partition AFTER your C-drive, unallocated. That would piss me off, that's wasted space in my opinion. Any reason why you left it like that??

    1) It's NOT a partition, OK? It's unallocated space - but really it's a difference in semantics between you and I and you have every right to call it what you want.

    2) I don't see any 450mg partition after MY C: drive - your eyes must be better than mine LOL. What I DO see is 46.58 GB of unallocated disk space (no partition) after my C drive. It would not surprise me at all, if that's indeed what you're referring to, that it would piss YOU off.

    3) The reason I purposely created it there (not "left it like that"), is as over-provisioning for my SSD. You can read all about that elsewhere and I don't care to debate it at this point. If I had a real need for that unallocated space, I might then re-evaluate that decision - it could be belt and suspenders but they aren't making things uncomfortable or hard to breath at the moment.

Hehehe, if you read my post, I typed unallocated space <------- after your C-drive. I have read about that over-provisioning for some ssd drives. Actually this Samsung ssd mentions it, that came with this computer. My Intel SSD 240, never needed anything like that. Still wondering if I want to remove this Samsung 840 EVO and replace it with my Intel ssd. ( just clone them) I like the Intel's features better. BUT not sure which one is faster, have to check on that. Their is no trim feature in Samsung's software, that I can see for one thing. Plus I've always liked SSD by Intel.

I wasn't talking about the fact that it's unallocated, I just don't know where you got the "450mg partition" information from since you did say that that you looked at my pic and that it was AFTER my C: drive- you saw something that I didn't - Hehehe

Windows 10 will execute TRIM fine on that drive as it stands, that's all the software you need, no need to rely on any Samsung software to do that.

I assume you know there's no use letting Samsung Magician run all the time either.

Lots of folks prefer Intel SSDs over Samsung EVOs, primarily due to the chip architecture, and are willing to pay the price premium. Since you've already paid for it (and assuming it's not a ways down the road in useful life already), why not use the Intel for the OS and the Samsung for data (heck, you could have the pleasure of converting your Samsung back to MBR in that case !!*092)?

By the way, I would seriously DIS-consider using Samsung's SSD Migration software if you clone since many problems are reported with that - don't take that the wrong way (had a little salt on my eggs this morning, don't need any more), I suspect you would be much more likely to use your beloved Acronis or even MiniTool for that.
