GPU keeps working (fans spinning) for a few seconds after shutdown

Hello, my PC has been having weird shutdown lately. When the screen goes black at the end of the shutdown, I hear my fans and components stop working, the PSU relay clicks, but the GPU keeps working and its fans keeping spinning (maybe some other components too, but the GPU is the loudest one). They spin for a second or two before PC turns itself on again for a second and back off after a few more seconds. The second time, it shuts down fully. The screen stays black during this entire process, no POST, nothing.

I think this might be the GPU, because it started after I upgraded to Windows 10 and installed a second HDD. During the installation I decided to remove the GPU to allow me for some cable management, and it's been doing this ever since. I don't think it might be the new HDD as it turns off with all other components. It could be the OS, I honestly don't know :/

My GPU is a Gigabyte GTX 760 OC

All components, including the GPU, work perfectly apart from the shutdown.

My temperatures are OK, so I dismissed the possibility of it cooling itself. I've also tried disabling fast booting but that didn't help.

    :)

Are my Graphics Card fans automatic?

When your system starts, the fans should spin up for a second or two, from then on when your GPU reaches a set temperature they should come on to cool your GPU and then once the PU has cooled sufficiently they should shut down . . . The temperature target
on that model is 75 degrees Celsius

Do not use third party software to adjust the fans on your graphics card, only use software supplied by the manufacturer

Laptop not shutting down properly after Installing Windows 10

Hi, my laptop won't shutdown after installing Windows 10. Updated my Bios, updated SSD
(Micron C400) firmware. Fans & ports of laptop are still working even after screen goes black and in-order to shut it down completely,
I've to press the power button for 10 seconds. I've tried disabling GPU, disabling Fast startup and using shutdown shortcut & fresh installed but same results ... P.S. Laptop does shutdown properly after 10-20 minutes but after that, it doesn't Laptop : Dell
    Inspiron 7537

    Windows Build 10240

Once windows shut down, BIOS takes over and it's probably doing that. It's actually not a bad thing, components cool slower and so less stress on them.

I'd love to believe it, but my temperatures are not high enough that BIOS should take over. Idling GPU is around 30C (full load at about 68C), idling CPU is around 32C, full load at 60C.

And it's only for about 2-3 seconds. Sounds like a very short time-frame to cool anything, isn't it?

It's still up to BIOS, once it turns of first time, there's no windows influence any more. I'm not aware of any PSU with anything to click inside, no mechanical relays in it, must be sound of HDD parking heads.

You're correct, those are probably parking heads. So, what should I do about it? I noticed that my chipset driver hasn't been updated since I bought the PC (which was over a year ago). I should probably update it, there's nothing else I can do, it seems.

You can try to update drivers and maybe even UEFI or BIOS. Intel likes releasing new BIOS versions often. Check with Gigabyte for BIOS and what changes are from one before, there may be some correction. In BIOS, turn off anything that you don't use, like FDD controller. COM port and stuff like that.

Isn't flashing a bit dangerous, as in only to be done like a last resort? Motherboard driver description makes it look like flashing is akin to summoning a demon from hell and offers several warnings against doing so. I will update my UEFI and chipset, but I'm doubtful about BIOS flashing.

I just suggested you just look if there's a new BIOS for which your problem is listed as fixed. Actually, Gigabyte has a nice utility for upgrading BIOS and it's quite safe "atBIOS" is called. It has option to just find and download newer BIOS file. I agree that flashing BIOS should be last resort for fixing a problem but I do it all the time anyway because I rarely buy new MB.

GPU keeps working (fans spinning) for a few seconds after shutdown

First, this is a sign of improper power supplied to the card. Do unplug the GPU again, and clean the pcie slot with a soft, big brush. Then, check the power supply cables that goes at the back of the card (a multimeter would be handy but at least plug them firmly).

About updates, Gigabyte even has a backup bios chip. Flashing is perfectly safe the last handful of years (biggest problem before was flashing the wrong BIOS, never a burn-out chip). Don't trust tin-foil-hat-people. BIOS updates are most of the times critical for the good functioning of your system, for both security and preventing data loss. Manufacturing process is getting slimmer every cycle, and with it, more flaws that needs to be worked around by software patches at the BIOS, drivers, and OS level.

You could also disable hibernate that will accelerate the shutdown.
[ still works from admin command prompt: powercfg -h off ]

In my opinion, you only flash the bios IF the manufacturer has put out a Bios update that solves a particular problem that you are having and only if that problem that you are having is actually a real problem for you.

Flashing can still be dangerous and brick your system in todays market, many manufacturers have ample warnings in their documentation about the risks that are still around by flashing your Bios.

I know there are people that need to do it, maybe to make some newer hardware compatible and visible to the bios, but to me I've yet to see any problem that I couldn't live with and avoid flashing the bios. It's just not worth it to me to take a chance and have to spend another $200 on a new mainboard again.

The bottom line to me is simply this... If you don't Need to flash it, then don't. If it's going to fix a specific issue that you are having that stops or hinders your use of the computer then try it but be aware that you could brick your computer if something goes catastrophically wrong with the update.

EVERY BIOS update is necessary! It's out of anybody's league to deem one needed or not.
Sure there are risks if you do it, but there are far greater risks if you do not do it. At least in my book.
Think of it this way: you can completely skip it and live with the issues, since the OS/drivers will have SOME fixes incorporated. But what happens before Windows is up and running? Like when you are reinstalling or "refreshing" Windows 10 for the 10th time? Or when Windows installs updates? If there is a critical bug with the cpu or hdd controller or memory parameters or whatever, and you end up losing data? How about embarrassing bugs that won't ever be listed in a bios update readme?

OP, don't take advice from people wearing Christmas hats, too *Smile)
