    Gray screen with movable cursor after resetting PC


    My PC was running slowly, so I just tried to reset it by using the Windows 10 installed application "Reset my PC". After it was done loading, when I tried to boot it, it just boots to a gray screen, where I can't do anything other than move a cursor around. I also cannot boot into recovery mode, using F11.


    I have updated my Asus BIOS as well.


    Is the only option here to boot from a USB?

    Mainly it involves creating a profile and putting higher 2D clocks:

    Windows 10 Black screen upon boot, movable cursor

    When I boot up my computer Windows 10 I get a black screen upon boot, with a movable cursor. when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del and enter task manager. I can see the task manager. from there I have to start a new task (explorer) and my computer desktop becomes
    visible. is there any way to correct the boot issue?

    Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you are facing. I will certainly help you with this.

    I appreciate your efforts toward solving the issue. Once you are able to boot to Desktop environment, I suggest you to sun SFC scan and check if there is any system file corruption.

    System File checker (SFC) scan is done to check if there are any corrupted system files that could be causing this issue. Kindly follow the below given steps:

    • Press Windows key + X, select Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt.
    • In Command prompt type sfc/scannow and press enter.
    • Restart the computer.
    If no corrupted system files were found in the previous state, then I suggest you to try the following steps:

    • Open command prompt by pressing Windows key + X and selecting “Command prompt admin”.
    • In command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:
    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
      • Close the command prompt and restart the PC and check if it works.
