  1. Groove app not updating

    Heya,

Am having an issue with Groove app not updating. This started on the win 10 14926 build and is still happening on the newest build, 14931
It tells me there is an update then gets to about 500kb and stops saying there is an error and to check details. I click it and it says it needs permission to install on system drive. I give it permission and it just does same thing over and over.

This also happens on skype preview app but as I don't use skype I have not worried about that app. Also does it on mail and calendar app but by closing the app it instantly will update with no further issues.

I have tried deleting Groove but that opened a can of worms with the above error showing over and over and not installing at all. I finally did a restore of default apps and groove is back but still wants to update and still same issue.

Any ideas anyone? Any help is appreciated

    Dragon

    :)

  2. Groove desktop app not updating

I ran the troubleshooting program. It said that my temporary internet files folder was in the wrong location and moved it to the "correct" location. This did not resolve my problems with Groove, but it did prevent my MS Office applications from functioning.
I had to go on a chat session to get that resolved.

After spending dozens of hours trying to get Groove to function - I've decided that the Groove ecosystem is just not ready for Prime Time. I recommend that Microsoft buy Rdio.

  3. Groove desktop app not updating

I'm finding that the desktop (Win 10) version of Groove music is not updating with music added elsewhere, or updating elsewhere with music added elsewhere.

I have a mixture of actual MP3s and similar in the music folder, a little on OneDrive, plus subscription music on my Win 10 PC.

Music added on the web version, Xbox One and my Windows Phone (slowly in the latter case) update with each other.

  5. Thank you dalchina for your reply and sorry for the delay in my response. Real life loves to get in the way.

First off sorry I did mean uninstall the app.

Secondly, I tried the above links you supplied(and much appreciated) to no avail. The error is still there and still wants me to allow it to install on system drive. Even though I ok it each time it still fails the update. The third link you gave me I tried but guess my tech knowledge is failing me as I cannot get a log of the event to show to see what the problem is
This is a report from power shell when trying to reinstall app with package command:

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocati
    on)\AppXManifest.xml"}Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation
    )\AppXManifest.xml"}]

    "System.String" to type "System.Management.Automation.ScriptBlock".

    + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo : InvalidArgument: () [ForEach-Object], ParameterBindingException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CannotConvertArgumentNoMessage,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.ForEachObjectCommand

I am at a loss at this point to be honest. I have googled everything I can think of, and short of reinstalling the OS I am out of ideas.

Again thank you though for your assistance Much appreciated

Ok, lets try the normal basic steps.

    Check file structure
    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

    Check system file integrity
If clear, then from an admin command prompt, run
    SFC /Scannow
    This will take some time

    Please report the result.

    Groove app not updating

Ok, chkdsk passed but there's some corruption of Windows system files and their backup.

I suggest an in-place upgrade repair install

An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed, and x64 if you have a 64 bits OS, else x86 (32 bits).

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
    - this includes a link from which you can obtain Windows 10 iso file (" download a Windows 10 ISO"), or create a bootable medium.

I would recommend creating the bootable medium, as this can be used
    - for any future in-place upgrade repair install
    - to boot from and use its recovery options should Windows become unbootable.
    - to clean install Windows

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
    - all/most associations will be unchanged
    - all your programs will be left installed
    - no personal data should be affected
    - you will lose any custom fonts
    - you will lose any customised system icons
    - you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
    - you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
    - Windows.old will be created
    - system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
    - you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)
    - inactive title bar colouring (if used) will be reset to default
    - if Qttabbar is installed, you need to re-enable it in explorer (Options, check Qttabbar)
This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.

    Recommendation:
Before you perform this major repair procedure, do create a disk image.

Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to
    - preserve your system (and your sanity)
    - back up your data
    - restore your system to a previously working state in a relatively short time

Recommended: Macrium Reflect (free/commercial) + boot disk/device + large enough external storage medium.

  9. Heya,

sorry for long delay. Disability likes to send me to hospital every so often.

I tried this morning to do a repair upgrade as you suggested. I used the iso 493 from Microsoft site as I had already deleted my iso on computer. When through all the steps and when Iget to what to keep it only allows me the nothing check box. I see that means the media I downloaded is not the same as my computer.

So I then tried the media creation tool and the exact same problem appears. Unable to check anything. Only the nothing box.

I have tried everything can think of to match the media with the build to no avail. I really hope I don't have to clean install this as I have some major sized games on here. ie: Forza apex 6 etc.

I have tried macrium before and when I went to use the image backup it would not work. Too many issues . I guess can try it again but am afraid am going to lose everything at this rate. I do have two back up drives(one I use to install apps and pics etc) so my SSD won't be full in a heartbeat.

I am at a loss basically. Hopefully you might have one last ditch try I can do before I have to start from scratch.

Thanks again you have been great in trying to help me

What is your current build number?
    (Windows key + R, winver)
    Mine's 14393.187

Yes, the build no. has to match, and by language too, as well as 32 bits or 64 bits.

You can retry the sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt-
    - but first do a clean boot and unplug all devices esp. wireless mouse.

You can also try this from Safe Mode.

If that fails, then again from an admin command prompt run
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

    then
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Finally from an admin command prompt run
    sfc /scannow
    again

If that fails and your symptoms are the same, you will need to do an in-place upgrade repair install.

  11. OK build number just updated as there is a new insider build which just installed on my computer.
    Ver number: 14936.1000

And I just checked the grove app and a few others are doing the same even with a new build Good news is I captured the install.esd file this time and in process of creating an iso. Hopefully this will work and I can follow through with your suggestions this time.

    I'll let you know ASAP

    Thanks
    Dragon

edit: In process now doing the commands you posted. There is an issue with scannow I see with this new build on the first page where Brink posted the notice. So now may be only choice is to do a repair if this iso works

If you've just installed a new build, there should be no need to do an in-place upgrade repair...

  13. Groove app not updating

OK with new build apps still doing same thing. Not updating. I ran the restore health command you gave and gt's to 95% or so and the following happens:

    >Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 10.0.14936.1000

    Image Version: 10.0.14936.1000

    [===========================95.6%======================= ]
    Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

So I take it you are saying there is no use in trying a repair? Should I just bite the bullet and start from scratch and hope it clears the errors then in store so this may hopefully end?

Well done.. but clearly MS's repair methods leave sth to be desired in not giving clear reasons for failure, leaving users guessing.

Now you have a working configuration, consolidate it by starting to use disk imaging routinely.
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

    You can recover from:
    - a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
    - ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
    - user error
    - unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
    - unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

Images also act as a full backup- you can extract files too.

You can even use images to help you move more easily and quickly to a new PC.

Imaging can even help you sleep at night knowing you have a second chance.

Many here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) as a good robust solution and more reliable than some others. It’s
    - more feature rich
    - more flexible
    - more reliable
than Windows Backup and Restore system images.

It's well supported with videos, help and a responsive forum.

There are other such programs, free/commercial, some with simpler interfaces, but Macrium R is one of the most robust and reliable.

    How long does it take?
SSD+ USB3 - maybe 15 mins for the first system image, less thereafter
    HDD + USB2 - maybe 40-50 mins
That’s with little personal data, few programs installed.
    - of course, depends how much you have on C:
(You can and should image all your partitions and disks)
