    Davinci Resolve and H.265 videos

I have been using the free version of Davinci Resolve 16 to edit videos from my GoPro Hero 7 Black camera on a PC that is about 5 years old. I had installed the HEVC codec from the Microsoft Store and was able to process H.265 video with no problems. The
system was underpowered to process 4K video so I bought a new system. It is a Dell G5 with i9 CPU and an NVidia RTX 2070 Super GPU.

I installed the HEVC codec on the new system. Davinci Resolve does not recognize that the HEVC codec is available. When importing H.265 videos, Resolve shows "Media Offline" on the video clips. I have seen multiple videos that show installing the HEVC codec,
either the paid or free version from the Microsoft Store, enables Davinci to work correctly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Davinci and the codecs My Windows 10 has all current updates installed. I have the latest version of the NVidia drivers and Davinci.

My new computer will play H.265 videos using the Windows Movie app and VLC.

One other difference between the two computers is that the old one is running the latest Windows Insider version. The latest insider version broke Davinci. It hangs at "Loading Fairlight Page". Prior to that version, it worked flawlessly.

I spoke with tech support for Davinci Resolve and was told that I had to get the full version and that the free version does not support H.265. I asked him why it worked on my old computer and on multiple other systems, as seen on Youtube and other forums.
He could not explain it and said that the free version does not include tech support so he couldn't elevate the issue.

Does anyone have any insight into this issue? Why would it work on a 5 year old system with an i3 CPU and an older NVidia GPU?

I really don't want to spend $299 for the paid version of Resolve when it appears that the free version should work.

  3. Windows 10 getting HEVC H.265 Codec to use Hardware Acceleration

Playing HEVC H.265 videos using Windows Media Player and GoPro Quik then the 4k 60 fps video appears all stuttering and becomes a slideshow. The CPU usage is going through the roof and it's not using Hardware Acceleration. I have installed the "HEVC Video Extensions" from Microsoft Store. When I use the app "Movies & TV" for playing the video file then it uses around 1% CPU and Hardware Acceleration seems to be enabled.

How can I get Windows Media Player and GoPro Quik to use Hardware Acceleration?

"HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer" (Free version that works with licence software like GoPro Quik): HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer - Microsoft Apps

    I have tried following:

    1. Uninstall all codecs, also the "HEVC Video Extensions" from Store: Windows Media Player plays only the sound, screen is black. Unable to open video in GoPro Quik
    2. Installed K-Lite Codec Pack (w/HEVC codec): Windows Media Player plays the video with both video and audio smoothly. The playback is hardware accelerated as it only used 1% CPU. Unable to open video in GoPro Quik
    3. Install "HEVC Video Extensions" from store (Regardless if K-Lite is installed or not): Windows Media Player plays video with both video and audio but it's stuttering. Playback is not hardware accelerated and it uses near 100% CPU. GoPro Quik is now able to open and edit the video but it's stuttering, using 100% CPU on playback and hard to edit the movie

    System specifications:

    • Windows 10 Pro N, Version 1803, OS Build 17134.165
    • Intel i7-8700K @ 3.7Ghz (8th gen, coffee lake, newer then Kaby Lake)
    • 16 GB Ram
    • Nvidia GeForce 1070 GTX (Driver version 398.82 which is the newest)

One solution would be using software like Handbrake to convert the video file from H.265 to H.264, but I consider that a "hack" as this really should work with my system spec.

Finding which videos in a directory of various videos are H.265?

    I'm not sure what your 'unspecified' types may be. I specifically created an H.265 encoded file for my screenshot and it shows as compression type {43564548-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71}
