Hi! I downloaded a buggy version of an app on accident when I set up my PC. It ended up breaking my PC, with it crashing every time I opened it. I fixed that problem by using the windows recovery on the blue screen and deleting apps that were foreign to the PC things like discord, steam, and games. In doing so I deleted the Program Files x86 folder and all it's data, which ended up having the only copy of some of my old game saves as well as some of my old art assets on it. I want to recover this. Please not I did not use One Drive or any of the built in Windows backups. I had external sof

  3. Change file association back to unknown program in Windows 10

    • Create an empty text file.
    • Navigate to "All Control Panel Items"
    • Choose "Default Programs"
    • Choose "Associate a File Type or Protocol With a Specific Program"
    • Navigate to the file type you want to dissociate.
    • Click the "Change Program" button on the upper right.
    • Scroll to the bottom of the menu and choose "More Apps"
    • Scroll to the bottom of the menu and choose "Look for Another App on This PC"
    • Change the file type to "All Types" and point to the empty text file you created in step 1 (or create one now).
    • Click the "Open" button.
    • Your file extension will now be associated with the blank text document.
    • DELETE the document to restore the "Unknown Application" status.
    • You'll have to leave the "Set Associations" menu and re-enter it to see the change.

    Unknown user

    <Okänd kontakt> is just Swedish for <Unknown contact>

When an unknown account is listed in permissions it's usually due to the file or folder having had permissions for a user account on this PC that has since been deleted. Or, if the drive is an external drive that is used by several machines, an account that exists on another PC.

Either way, as the unknown user doesn't exist on this PC then having it listed in permissions doesn't grant access to any account that actually exists.
