Windows 10: Had to Wipe the drive clean

I had an interesting experience.

We had a power failure so Windows 10 did not shut down properly. No big deal, right? It's happened to us all.
Just restart as always, and it will correct itself.

Nope.

It would not restart, it kept saying errors. I had to wipe out the hard drive so as I type this I am back to Windows 7
I knew it was too good to be true! lol

When your free upgrade to 10 was originally activated Microsoft will keep the Hardware Configuration details on their Servers for recognition purposes if you have to reinstall 10.

my computer got corrupted and I had to go back to the original settings. this brought me back to windows 8.1. can i go back to windows 10 without buying a new copy?

Did you try booting the Win 10 install disc or flash drive and running chkdsk /r against the drive? That usually fixes problems caused by power dropping (corrupted file system).

 

I have no idea how to do those things. I should have made a copy, but didn't. Even if I did, I would not know how to fix the problem. To me a simple power failure should not cause that kind of mess.

 

Depends on when the failure occcured and what was going on. If the computer was in the middle of writing to the hard drive then it will not complete. That can cause file corruption which is typically what running chkdsk will fix.
