How to: Turn On or Off Windows Defender Firewall in Windows 10


Information Starting with Windows 10 build 16193, Windows Firewall has been renamed to Windows Defender Firewall.

Windows Defender Firewall is designed to help prevent hackers or malicious software from gaining access to your PC through the Internet or a network.

This tutorial will show you different ways on how to turn on or off Windows Firewall for network locations (profiles) in Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to turn on or off Windows Firewall.


Note Windows Firewall is turned on by default in Windows 10.

You shouldn't turn off Windows Firewall unless you have another third party firewall installed and turned on. Turning off Windows Firewall might make your PC (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to unauthorized access to your network.

OPTION ONE [/i] To Turn On Windows Firewall by Notification
1. Click/tap on the notification (if available) from Windows Firewall to turn on Windows Firewall for all network profiles. (see screenshot below)








OPTION TWO [/i] To Turn On Windows Firewall in Security and Maintenance
1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Security and Maintenance icon.

2. Click/tap on the Turn on now button for Network firewall under the Security section for all network profiles. (see screenshot below)








OPTION THREE [/i] To Turn On Windows Firewall in Windows Firewall Settings
1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Windows Firewall icon.

2. Do step 3 or step 4 below for how you would like to turn on Windows Firewall.

3. Click/tap on the Use recommended settings button to turn on Windows Firewall for all network profiles. (see screenshot below)



4. Click/tap on the Turn Windows Firewall on or off link on the left side. (see screenshot below)




A) Select (dot) Turn on Windows Firewall for each network profile (ex: domain, private, or public) you want, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)








OPTION FOUR [/i] To Turn Off Windows Firewall in Windows Firewall Settings
1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Windows Firewall icon.

2. Click/tap on the Turn Windows Firewall on or off link on the left side. (see screenshot)



3. Select (dot) Turn off Windows Firewall for each network profile (ex: domain, private, or public) you want, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)







OPTION FIVE [/i] To Turn On or Off Windows Firewall in Command Prompt

1. Open an elevated command prompt.

2. Enter the command below you want to use into the elevated command prompt, and press Enter. (see screenshots below)

1. Open an elevated PowerShell.

2. Enter the command below you want to use into the elevated PowerShell, and press Enter. (see screenshots below)

*Arrow Set-NetFirewallProfile -Enabled True

OPTION SEVEN [/i] To Turn On or Off Windows Firewall in Windows Defender Security Center


Note This option is only available starting with Windows 10 build 15007.

1. Open the Windows Defender Security Center, and click/tap on the Firewall & network protection icon.

2. Click/tap on Private (discoverable) network or Public (non-discoverable) network you want to turn on or off Windows Firewall for. (see screenshot below)



3. Turn on (default) or off Windows Firewall for what you want, and click/tap on Yes when prompted by UAC to approve. (see screenshots below)

4. Check or uncheck (default) Blocks all incoming connections, including those in the list of allowed apps for what you want, and click/tap on Yes when prompted by UAC to approve. (see screenshots below)

5. When finished, you can close the Windows Defender Security Center if you like.

Windows 10 Defender Firewall can't be turned off

You can turn off and reset Windows Defender Firewall from:

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Click on System and Security.
3. Click on Windows Firewall.

Third-party antivirus programs usually have their own uninstallers provided by the software developer. We suggest checking the developer's website or contacting their support team for assistance with uninstalling their program. After fully uninstalling the
third-party antivirus software, you may turn on Windows Defender by following these steps:

• Click Start.
• Type Windows Defender Security Center and press Enter.
• Click Firewall and network protection.
• Click Private (discoverable) network and click On.
• Click Public (non-discoverable) network and click On.

Windows 10 Defender Firewall can't be turned off

No I cannot. I get various errors...

I am using Windows 10 on a Dell desktop. This set-up came with a McAfee firewall installed (trial offer, I guess). I uninstalled McAfee (using McAfee's removal tool) so I could use Windows Defender firewall. Now it appears I have neither. The below screenshot
shows the McAfee firewall is still installed and the Windows Defender firewall cannot be turned on because I'm using another firewall provider. The setup>programs and apps>uninstall routine does not list McAfee as a program to be uninstalled. Services does
not list McAfee as a service to be turned off. How can I get this logjam fixed?

Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off

You should always run Windows Defender Firewall even if you have another firewall turned on. Turning off Windows Defender Firewall might make your device (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to unauthorized access.

• To turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off, select the Start button, and then select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Firewall & network protection. Choose a network profile, and then under Windows Defender Firewall, switch the setting to On or Off.
• Note: If your device is connected to a network, network policy settings might prevent you from completing these steps. For more info, contact your administrator.
