Hands on: Microsoft is bringing more AI features to Windows 10, including object eraser

Microsoft doesn’t want Windows 10 to miss out on AI capabilities. After bringing Copilott to Windows 10, Microsoft is now adding new features “AI-powered” features to the Photos app.

For those unaware, Microsoft Photos on Windows 11 offers some cool AI tools, such as the ability to blur, replace or remove the background. These capabilities and the Google Photos-like Magic Eraser feature called “Generative erase” are coming to Windows 10 via the Microsoft Photos app.

If you’re in the Release Preview Channel, you’ll notice a new update for the Photos app in the Microsoft Store. This update enables the following features: Blur background, Remove and Replace background, and Generative erase.

As you can see in the updated Photos app for Windows 10, you can now blur the image’s background, making the subject stand out more. For example, you could remove the shallow depth of field effect or remove the background entirely using these AI features, which were previously offered via apps like Photoshop.

Another option “replaces” lets you replace the image’s background with something else. This could mean putting the subject into a completely different scene. There’s also a “Background brush tool” with a toggle switch next to it, which is currently set to ‘Off’. This tool would allow for more precise edits.

Windows 11 already has AI features in the Photos app, but Generative Erase is a new addition.

Microsoft prepares Google Magic Eraser-like feature

Microsoft Photos’ “Generative Erase” is somewhat similar to Google Magic Eraser. You’ll find the Generative Erase in the Photos app in a new “Erase” tab, which replaces the Spot Fix tab.

As the name suggests, the Generative Erase lets you either fix or remove distractions from your photos.

For example, you may use this AI feature to remove unwanted people from your family picture.

The Generative Erase appears to be the replacement for Spot fix, which was removed from the Photos app when Microsoft moved to the new code structure. Microsoft still offers the classic Spot fix feature, but if you want to use the old code, you’ll need to download the legacy Photos app from the Store.

Microsoft has no plans to restore the old Spot fix feature as it wants everyone to switch to the new AI-powered “erase” tool, which lets you adjust the brush size to remove smaller elements from the pictures.

Microsoft testing blue light reduction feature for Windows 10

"Microsoft is slowly revealing new features in its next major update to Windows 10, and it appears blue light reduction feature might be a future addition. The software giant released a new build of Windows 10 testers yesterday with very few visible additions, but Windows enthusiasts have already started picking it apart for clues on new features. Twitter user "Core"has discovered references to a "BlueLightReduction" setting deep within the next major update to Windows 10 (codenamed Redstone 2). It appears to be a setting that will be toggled from the Action Center (notification center) in the operating system.

F.lux has been the most popular option for Windows users looking to reduce blue light in the evenings, but Microsoft's own native toggle will bring this feature to every Windows 10 user. Apple has also integrated a similar feature in iOS 9, but it hasn't announced any plans to bring blue light reduction to Mac OS yet. Microsoft only appears to be testing the feature right now, so there's no guarantee it will ship in the update due early next year. If Microsoft does implement it fully then it will presumably be available on the mobile version of Windows 10, too.
