Windows 10: Hard Drive 55% fragmented. Problem?

Asking this question for a friend. Windows 10 Disk Defragment tool will run but always says 55% when done. Problem?

DRIVE (C Hard disk drive OK (1% fragmented)

RECOVERY (D Hard disk drive OK (3% fragmented)

HP_TOOLS (E Hard disk drive OK ()% fragmented)

SYSTEM Hard disk drive Needs optimization (71% fragmented)

Currently my hard drive not fragmented. If I reinstall again window multiple times in a short time,my hard drive yes fragmented not?

Interesting. Just for grins, you might ask them to try the free version of Defraggler (from Piriform, same guys who do CCleaner and Recuva). Wonder if those results will come out the same? At that point, I'd start thinking: time to start running drive diagnostics on that disk.

Well I agree but He posted a question in Microsoft Community forum and got this reply. "Won't cause any problem. Long gone are the days when we had to worry about disc fragmentation."

 

In the good old days you had to set interleave then defrag but thats gone now if a disk can read all sectors one after another its fine if its not quick enough and has to wait for the disk to spin round again then the interleave had to be changed so it could read the next bit before the disk did a full revolution. So it can be bad in some cases if the files is all in line if the disk cant read that quick

 

Even though 55 % seems to bit a bit much to me it wouldn't really worry. While in theory it is still ideal if big files are stored sequentially it's not really that much of a problem anymore. Check if automatic disk optimization is activated and if it is I would let Windows take care of it.

 

I wonder if it is just the $MFT that is fragmented, making statistics go crazy.

 

Is that a partition with a letter, ie, C: or D: ?

 

I wonder if there are some files that just can't be defragmented. Either because they're too large, or otherwise.
Perhaps the hibernation file, page file or other system file?
How much free space is on the drive?

A third party defragmenter which can tell you which files are the fragmented ones would help.

I believe problem seems to be free space. He is running Disk Cleanup now. It been cleaning on Windows Update files for about 5 hours now. About 60% complete this morning but still working.

Does defrag require a certain amount of free space to work in Windows 10? I know XP would not defrag if it did not have a certain amount of free space.

 

Yes, regular Defrag does require some free space too and so all other programs.

In nearly 25 years of using Windows I can honestly say I've NEVER found ANY SIGNIFICANT improvement with defragging HDD's.

However if you really insist --the BEST way of achieving a better result is to use MACRIUM to IMAGE your HDD, then delete / reformat the HDD and then restore the image. (Note --don't CLONE the HDD but IMAGE it). - Don't forget the system partition too when imaging the HDD.

This whole process will run a LOT faster than slow useless defragging processes and you will have a backup too !!!!!.

Free Macrium is probably used by about 60 - 70% of people on this forum who SENSIBLY take regular backups.

Windows 10 Pro installed on C. Standard HP partitions ie, HP tools and recovery. Updated to 10586, Updated to 1511 and now running 1607. He needs a clean install.
