Windows 10: Hard Drive at 100% Active time

First of all I have an SSD that is working fine. I’m not sure what happened I’ll try to explain in detail my PC randomly crashed so I turned it off and back on and it took 10+ minutes to load, it normally takes 5 seconds I went into task manager and it says my D: drive has 100% Active time. 50% overall disk usage

(I’m on Windows 10)

I’ve read loads of tips and tricks to fix it but nothing has worked

My D: drive shows up, but it doesn’t show how much GB I’ve used or have left it’s just the picture. If I click on it, the computer crashes, disk cleanup won’t load, I tried to format it but when I click it nothing happens, it crashes if I try to click on properties.

I’ve updated my windows, I disabled everything I was told to on the Microsoft website and nothing has changed. I tried to run a disk check on CMD but it says it can’t because it’s a RAW Drive.

Basically I have no idea how to fix this problem and I’m hoping someone on here would be able help. Been going at it all day!

Hi andrewgetz1 ,

If you mean your hard drive is at 100% access all the time:

Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)

Click on the Disk Column Header so the arrow faces down

What processes are now at the top of the processes list?

 

Western Digital HDD Active Time 100 percent

Needs some advice with someone that has some experience with this.

I have a Western Digital My Book 4TB External Hard Drive about 2 months old that is not performing well, what I have noticed is that the performance drop happens when the Active time (reported by Windows 10) goes to 100%.

ISSUE: When the Drive Active time is around 30% I get about 120MB/sec, when the Active Time is 100% I get less than 1MB/sec.

What's using the drive:

• I have some vhd's on the drive
  

What I've done so far to troubleshoot

• I've checked the processes using the drive and it is the vhd's that I expect using it
  
• The vhd's are not using the drive that much to cause a 100% active time
  
• I'm using Windows 10 Pro and it is set to High Performance power options
  
• I've checked S.M.A.R.T values and they are fine
