  1. Hard Drive constantly at or near 100% read/write

Today I experienced one of my fave raves about Win 10, the sudden decision on rebooting, just when I'd like to get something done, to start a lengthy update.

I don't know what was going on prior to the update, but when I THINK it finished, the hard drive began to show 100% read/write in Task Manager. It has continued for two hours, now dipping to 95% from time to time. I believe it is slowing my computer, or at least it would have in XP.

First of all, is there a way to get along with these updates a bit better?

Second, what gives with the hard drive? I hadn't seen this previously.

    Thanks.

    :)

Disk usage constantly at or near 100%

I have tried the suggestions in the other forum posts addressing this issue, but nothing seems to fix it. My disk usage, even after a clean reboot with no programs running, is consistently at 99-100%.

I ran the Windows Performance Recorder and saved the file as described here: Windows performance recorder

I've uploaded that file to DropBox and just want to confirm where/who I should send that file to so that they might be able to help identify what is causing this problem?

Should I just post the link here in this message or is there a more secure way to send it?

    Thank you.

Disk usage constantly at or near 100%

    Avast is cleanly uninstalled.

I don't know how to identify the #1056 processes, I'm a complete novice to using this program.

One thing that I want to add, in case it helps, is that the biggest lags occur when loading a program.

So when booting up, disk usage opens and stays at 100% for a bit. Then after it drops down, if I ever open any application - windows live mail, google chrome etc. - it immediately launches back up to 100% and will stay there for a bit, before coming back
    down.

Also, what is a normal disk usage percentage?

In Settings > Update & Security > Update settings, you can set "Active hours" during which update triggered restarts will not run.

    Seems you're downloading something.
Please post a screenshot of your task manager organised by Network (click the network tab to show the process using this most).

  10. Thanks for the suggestion. I see very little activity in the Network tab. I hope this helps.

Well, your previous screenshot showed 752kbs - ethernet, and high disk activity.
    Your second is different.

    microsoft compatibility telemetry
    - Hopefully someone who's come across this will be able to comment.

One person suggests it's related to Office:
    Overview of Office Telemetry)
    Another suggests
"I know this service is to collect all kind of data so MS can improve W10 but is their any way to shut it down /prevent starting itself?"
    Another suggests it's a Win 10 compatibility check- pre-upgrade to '10. (That's on win 7/8).
Will take a while to identify it.

I don't have that process running.

    Searching for
    microsoft compatibility telemetry disk use
for example, yields results which may help you.

    Basic ideas here:
Microsoft Telemetry Compatibility - Microsoft Community

    Nuke it option here:

  12. Although the second screenshot indicated 50%, both before and after taking the shot the disk was at 100%. That is anomalous, but there it is.

I don't have Office. It is an option, I suppose for a 30-day trial.

I'm already at Win10. If I understand the statement.

I don't have that process running.

This is both more irritating and more complicated than I had hoped. My computer is super slow until Windows has been open an hour or so.

I suggest you research that process. There's almost nothing on this forum about it, so it's not a familiar problem. What is evident from searching the internet is that others have seen it related to disk activity.

    Further simple steps:
    1. Does this happen if you do a clean boot?
    2. If not, enable more until it does occur.
    3. Try to reach a conclusion.

I've given you two other possible steps previously.

There is probably a better answer out there, but it will take a bit more persistence.
Not all problems get instant solutions.
