Windows 10: Hard drive stopped being recognized

External USB drive stopped being recognized. I opened up the enclosure and connected it via SATA interface but still no cure. The drive is not shown on Disk Management. I tried different cable, different PC and different port.
Is there a way to recover data in it?

windows restarts randomly and then won't boot

Bios has stopped recognizing the hard drive so I'm assuming it's bad. Trying a fresh install on another drive.

 

My external hard drive is not being recognized

I have a WD My Passport external hard drive and a few days ago it stopped working properly. When I plug it in, it shows up under My PC but I cannot open it, and it doesn't show me any information (like what I named it as or how much space is available)
when I try to open it the window freezes. I looked online to find a solution but did not see anyone that has had the same problem. When I tried solutions to similar problems that recommend using diskmgmt.msc I can't even attempt them. Any program that looks
into my hard drives like diskmgmt.msc or WinDirStat will not work, they just hang on the loading screen. I tried it on several computers, and it seems the problem only exists on windows computers, on MacBooks it loads fine.

 

Does the bios see it if not its dead the only hope would be to pay a professional recovery firm

 

If you have the drive out of it's enclosure how do you have it attached to the computer? is it internally to a desktop computer? or is it connected via a USB-SATA adapter? if so, does the adapter have it's own power supply?
Put your ear next to the drive, does it sound like it is spinning up? Or is it silent, cold to the touch? If it is spinning, then as stated, boot into Setup (Bios) under System Information or the Main page, it should list all of your drives. Does it list the drive by manufacturer? If it is not recognized in the Bios, and or is not spinning up , it has failed and needs to be replaced.

 

It is generating intermittent high pitch noise, not constant disk spinning noise. Looks like it's dead.

I wonder if SSD is more reliable than 2.5" disk type hard drive. If so I should quit using 2.5" disk type hard drive.
Any comment?

 

I have had much better experience with SSD then with mechanical drives. For sure SDD's are also less vulnerable to movement and shock but they can also fail. I learned my lesson the hard way: Always make regular backups of my data.

From the sound of your hard disk I would stop using it if you have important data and take it to a professional for data recovery.
