Have a new HP laptop with Windows 11. Casting wirelessly to TV. It connects, however went into second screen only, so, PC goes black and TV shows last laptop, but it will not allow me to changes settings and cannot change to duplicate. Tried through settings, display, Windows+P, Windows+K, etc. Have searched internet for days and cannot find an answer.

  2. Cast to TV not repeatable on new laptop

Yes they are both on the same network. The TV is hard wired but we also disconnected that and connected it wirelessly to try that and that didn't work either. It works if the TV is removed from the list and then added again but is not repeatable either way.

When I first tried casting on the new laptop I added the TV and the permission screen popped up on the TV. I allowed it to connect always and it did connect but is not repeatable unless I remove the Samsung TV from the Bluetooth & devices > Devices screen screen in settings. It appears there under both Audio and Wireless displays & docks. When I remove the listing under Audio, it also deletes the listing under Wireless displays & docks. I can then add it again using all the methods in the article you listed and it WORKS the first time and casts to the TV. However, when I click on the DISCONNECT icon in the tray and they try to cast again, I get connection failed on both the laptop and the TV. If I remove the TV and add it again it works. Very frustrating.

After it's added, something is blocking it from loading again. I did not have this issue with my old Dell laptop running Windows 10 so it's either this new laptop or Windows 11 or something else. The HP tech mentioned McAffee which I turned off and tried it that way but no difference. It wasn't repeatable that way either.

  3. Cast to TV not repeatable on new laptop

Brand new HP laptop running Windows 11. When I ADD DEVICE to cast to my Samsung TV, the TV shows up as an available device and the laptop mirrors or casts to the TV. In otherwords, IT WORKS! However, after you disconnect and try to reconnect again it fails to connect. Both the TV and laptop report connection errors. The only way to get it to connect again is to remove the TV from the Bluetooth and Device list then add it again and it works, but just initially again and is not repeatable.

I've spent hours troubleshooting fixes online and none work. Yesterday I was on the phone with HP support for over an hour. They remotely operated my laptop and tried many fixes and none worked. Wireless display is installed and all drivers are up to date including the TV software. They finally suggested reinstalling Windows but I'm not wanting to do that and loose all the "stuff" I've spent four days installing from my previous laptop. BTW my old laptop on Win 10 worked everytime as does my phone and iPad so I'm guessing it's a window 11 issue.

The Wireless Display app is installed and says that it's ready for me to connect but then goes on to say "Protected content can't be viewed on this device" Next it says Press Ctrl + S to open settings. When I do that a window opens up but does not show any Allowed Devices or Blocked Devices on the Device Access List. There are no options to add anything. Not sure if this is the problem.

So the question is, why does cast work when first added but then will not repeat to connect again unless I remove the TV and add it again?

Casting from HP Laptop to TV

    Hi ChristopherWilmore,

Thanks for querying in Microsoft Community.

It sounds like the TV screen goes black when you cast from the laptop to the TV. This may be caused by the resolution on your laptop. Kindly try the method below to see if the problem can be solved.

    1. In the search box on the taskbar, enter screen resolution, then select Change the screen resolution from the list of results.
    2. Under Resolution, select the arrow, then select the resolution that says Recommended. (The highest resolution is the recommended resolution on the device.)
    3. Select Apply.
Generally, the following ways are possible for one to project from one's laptop to the TV.

    1. Casting with an HDMI Cable.

If your laptop has an HDMI port, then it’s as simple as plugging the cable into your laptop and an open HDMI port on your TV. Then you just need to switch the TV input source to the correct HDMI input.

Some laptops don’t have a standard HDMI port. In fact, many newer laptops don’t. In this case, to use a wired connection, you will need an HDMI adapter that is compatible with the port on your laptop. To begin casting, plug the adapter into your laptop’s port, then connect the HDMI cable both to the HDMI adapter on your laptop and to the TV.

    2. Casting with a Wireless Display Adapter. It includes Microsoft Miracast, Chromecast or Wi-Fi Dongle, AirPlay.

A wireless display adapter is typically a small device that plugs into the HDMI port of your TV. It acts as a receiver to the signal being transmitted wirelessly from your laptop. What’s critical is that the wireless display technology in the laptop must be compatible with the technology in the wireless display adapter.

    3. Casting with a Wireless Video HDMI Kit.

Wireless video display kits allow you to cast a laptop screen to a TV without a wired connection. These kits often include everything you need for casting and offer an easy plug-and-play set-up.
