Having problems reinstalling some software,WCIFS warning/error

    Greets,

Everything was running fine until Win10 decided to upgrade itself about two weeks ago. After the upgrade I tried to launch Jasc Paintshop Pro and after a spinning circle nothing happened. Tried launching it with different compatibility settings with no success. Then I tried to uninstall it and that would not work either. Eventually I was able to remove it by launching the uninstaller from within the install program and some repairs to the registry with ccleaner. Since then when I try to install the program it gets stuck at registering modules. I take a look in Task Manager and there is one instance of Windows Installer and three of Windows Installer 32 of three varying sizes. Through trial and error I've found that only one of the WI32s is stuck. I stop that one and installation or uninstall completes, of course because I stopped the one installer the process is incomplete. When I check in event viewer I get this warning at time of install under the System tab:

File System Filter 'wcifs' (Version 10.0, ‎2016‎-‎09‎-‎15T11:42:03.000000000Z) failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy15'. The filter returned a non-standard final status of 0xC000000D. This filter and/or its supporting applications should handle this condition. If this condition persists, contact the vendor.

Event ID is 4 and task category is None

Any ideas on how to fix this or if it is fixable? I can't use recovery or even reset because it only goes back as far as the upgrade.

Please note that so far it is just this one program that is giving me problems, there is a sister program on the PSP install disk called Animation Shop that installs and works just fine. So I don' t think its a compatibility issue.

Thanks for looking & maybe answering,

    :)

FilterManager Errors During Installation of Cumulative Updates

Thanks for the reply, Phillipe. It may be that the update simply stopped the wcifs filter, which then prevents any further warnings to be sent to the windows log. You can check the status by opening an Admin Command Prompt and typing "sc query wcifs"
When I stop the wcifs filter ("sc stop wcifs") and set the startup to "disabled" ("sc config wcifs start= disabled") I no longer get the warnings in the windows log but, like you, I continue to get the System Volume Information folder filling with files generated
while Carbonite is active. If I pause Carbonite both the warnings cease and the files in the System Volume Information are no longer generated. So I don't know whether it is a problem with Windows or with Carbonite or with both. I am up to date with the
updates for Windows 10 and still have the problem with both the warnings in the windows logs and with the files being generated in the System Volume Information folder if Carbonite is active. But, as I said, I can at least get rid of the warnings by stopping
the wcifs filter using the command line given above, but that does not solve the main problem of the System Volume Information folder filling up with files.

  3. After 2+ days of troubleshooting, was finally able to successfully upgrade to Windows 10 Creator Version 1709

Hi, I am also not able to update Windows with the latest Fall Creators Update and my system freezes also at 75%.

I already dit a complete reinstall of my system and even when restarting from a clean windows system (v1607), I get the same thing.

I also have a Ralink WLAN network card. So I definitily going to try your solution.

However, I wanted to know if you can find anything in the logbooks that would explain this behaviour.

I looked into mine and I find this warning, just before the service control manager fails and the whole system freezes:

"File System Filter 'wcifs' (Version 10.0, ‎2016‎-‎09‎-‎15T17:42:03.000000000Z) failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1'. The filter returned a non-standard final status of 0xC000000D. This filter and/or its supporting
applications should handle this condition. If this condition persists, contact the vendor
    ."

Do you also have this warning?

Have you tried anything like this: How to fix File System Filter WCIFS failed with Event ID 4 (Windows 10) - wintips.org - Windows Tips & How-tos

    Thx!

    Peter.

    Hi Kleptic

You didn't mention what version of Jasc Paintshop Pro you are trying to install. From the name I think it is older as it appears Corel bought the company. I very well am wrong. Can you share what version you are running?

There was another member whose software fail to load, not the same program, and I steered him to vendor site where he could get a Hotfix.

There are several patches available on their site which might help.

    Greets,

It's Jasc PaintShop Pro v9, version is about 10 years old and was working fine right up till the upgrade. Thanks for the link but not the versions I need. I have tried installing Corel's version's the newer ones install okay but if I try their first version's, when they still used the Jasc moniker IE: PaintShop Photo Pro v11 it also will not install, it too get's stuck at registering modules with the shadow drive warning. Originally I was also getting a DCOM error but I was able to correct that by taking ownership and changing permissions.

  6. I can't tell you what changed. I know there was the posting about Chalkboard software but as I said they posted a fix.

It might be worth chasing with Corel and if you have real luck they will have a forum where people, who like yourself were impacted, are trying to resolve.

Can I ask, have you reviewed event viewer when you are doing install to see if errors are being logged that may help forum members determine what is happening.

Well you are not alone. With the error you posted I did a search and found this from today. There is no mention of software, just the event in event viewer, no responses yet.

Volume Shadow Copy is usually associated with Imaging tools, Macruium, Acronis or Restore points. You didn't make any changes in these areas did you.

Do you use restore points and have you created one recently?

    Greets,

I do have restore points on and it's been making restore points everytime I do or try to install a program. Last night while trying to use some of them they failed. So I had to go back to the image I created right after the upgrade. At this point I'm thinking this warning, while relevant, is not where my problem lies with the install. I used a program called WhatIsHang to see what I could see, it seems to be pointing to ntdll.dll as where my problem lies, I'm probably wrong but going to see what I can do about that. Seriously thinking about dumping 10 altogether and going back to 7 or maybe 8.1 because I'm guessing that as soon as I do figure this mess out along will come yet another upgrade, update to mess it all up again. Had this PC for two months now and its been an uphill battle with one thing or another ever since. I haven't had one day where all I did was use this pc for my computing needs.
