Windows 10: HD Audio Controller System Device suddenly stopped working.

I'm having trouble with my computer's HD Audio Controller. It was working at one point, I then shut down my computer for about and hour and when I came back I had no sound. I checked for Windows updates and also individual driver updates but still no help. I looked at the controller's driver and tried the option of 'pick from a list of available drivers on my computer' and there is only one option which seems to be the problem driver. It's simply called 'High Definition Audio Controller'. Upon selecting this driver I get the same error message that I was getting before; This device cannot st

HD Audio Controller Only Showing Up Under System Devices

Hey everyone, so here's my issue, basically a while ago my 3.5mm jacks stopped working, and any device I plugged in wouldn't get detected. After checking the sounds menu and device manager, I noticed there was no mention of realtek hd audio anywhere, and the realtek audio console software would just load constantly everytime I opened it. I've tried installing different realtek drivers from both the realtek's and my motherboard's website and none seem to fix it. I've also tried disabling and re-enabling "HD Audio Controller" in my motherboard's BIOS and updating my BIOS mware as well. As a last resort I tried re-installing Windows and that didn't fix it either. I did discover something new though, while no mention of any HD audio controllers can be found in "sound, video, and game controllers", Two devices labelled "High Definition Audio Controller" did show up in "System Devices" in Device Manager. I eventually found out that one of them is my GPU's audio controller which I conmed because when I disabled it my monitor's audio stopped working and when I disabled HD Audio in my BIOS, one of the hd audio controllers disappeared in Device Manager. So far I've tried uninstalling the devices and trying to get windows to update them automatically, but it keeps telling me that I already have the latest drivers. I also tried installing realtek drivers again but to no avail. TLDR; Windows can't detect my audio controller properly, unsure if it's a hardware or software issue since I'm not getting any errors/warnings from windows.

• What is the exactly issue you are facing with audio and how exactly are you trying to access it?
• What exactly do you mean by: Have windows 10, and suddenly my audio stopped?
• Have you made any changes to the operating system, prior to this issue?

I suggest you to install all the pending updates and audio drivers and check if it helps.

Step 1: I suggest you to update the audio drivers from Device Manager and check.

Steps:

• 
  Right click on the Start
  button from the desktop and select Device Manager.
  
• 
  Expand Audio inputs and outputs, right click on
  High Definition Audio Device and click on Update driver software.
  
• 
  Also, try to search for the drivers with the help of model number of your computer from the Manufacturer’s website and install them.
  

Step 2: I suggest you to install all the pending updates after upgrade to Windows 10.

• Connect to the internet.
• Press Windows key and type
  updates.
• Click on Check for updates.
• Under Windows Updates, click on
  Check for updates.
• Try to install the updates being shown.

Via HD Audio - Sound and Mic not working

I went around and around with this problem too (ASUS S500CA microphone would not work after Win10 upgrade). After much frustration the fix ended up being very simple. From device manager, under: sound, video and game controllers select VIA HD or VIA HD(Win10) driver, select update driver, choose "browse computer," then "let me pick from list," then select the generic High Definition Audio driver (not any of the VIA HD choices) install, restart, fixed.

Interestingly, an update changed my driver back to VA HD(win10) today, microphone stopped working again. I quickly fixed by changing it back to generic driver.
