Windows 10: HDD spins and stops continously.... while display is off (Laptop is not on sleep or hibernate)

when my laptop display turns off (only screen timeout, not in sleep or hibernate mode). HDD spins and stops and then suddenly starts again... I can identify it with the help of the sound of the HDD (I'm not talking about the sound of writer in HDD, but the HDD actually spins and stops and then spins again and it is also not the process of reading/writing of HDD). I have updated my laptop from windows 10 v1803 to 1809 and then to 1903. I had reset the laptop 3 times. I have performed system recovery two times. I checked for corrupted files in windows system but there were no corruptions. I have performed a hardware test, every single test was passed (HDD passed all the test). Laptop is in warranty. service engineer came and told me that it's process of windows but I don't believe it because the sounds of HDD are like HDD is powering ON and then powered OFF. Laptop is fully functional and operational... I can use the Laptop well... but I have also seen some unexpected corruption of windows OS. (please don't give suggestions of updating my laptop to 1903 and to update all my drivers as I've already did that but the problem still persisted then)

sleep or hibernate

sleep and hibernate are the same thing now.


S3 'sleep' has the entire system powered off, EXCEPT for system ram. a copy of ram is stored on the HDD when entering sleep.
To answer the OP's question about the HDD taking wear and tear moving the laptop around - in sleep mode, it is powered off. ONLY system RAM has power in S3 sleep states.

Hibernate is when it loses power, it boots from the saved copy of ram. Often, this can load slower than a fresh boot since it has to load more from the HDD than usual.


so asking which you prefer... well, unless its a laptop you plan to store overnight or something, use sleep. its the same thing.

S3 sleep drains my laptop battery at only 2-3% an hour, so its not like its going to have a large impact on daily use.

I think you have sleep and hibernate confused... sleep just puts the computer in a low power state, making resuming the session faster... hibernate shuts down the whole computer and basically just saves whats in RAM to the hdd and loads it on next startup. IIRC...

if you have to choose between sleep and hybernate, i prefer hybernate than sleep mode
in hybernate mode you can start up your laptop faster
yeah for HDD as long as you dont drop it and you keep you environment clean, better airflow it should be OK
