Windows 10: he XP system disk of the old computer was inserted into the data disk of the new Win 10...

I inserted the XP system disk of my old computer into the data disk of my Win 10 computer. After inserting it back into the old computer, I cannot start the system. How can I restore the old system disk?

Migrating old Win 10 system to New computer

My granddaughter's old laptop has a fried motherboard and she has many Apps and files for graphics work (no games) that she needs to transfer to a new laptop computer. There is an older backup but alas not a recent one.

The existing hard drive has the free Win 10 update (from Win 8) and I was hoping to migrate the whole System/Apps/Data to the new computer but the hard drive is an MBR disk and the new computer is UEFI and won't boot the old drive which I have connected
with a USB enclosure while changing the boot type to Legacy. Presently, I have no means to access the old drive system, but can read the files as an external USB hard drive. There is a lot of data and older graphics apps that would take forever to re-establish
individually to the new drive.

My options are:

1.) Backup the old hard drive and restore to a GPT disk, but the new computer can only read it as an external drive, and probably not the system.

2.) Copy the old hard drive to new hard drive but this will lose App settings in the registry.

3.) Convert the old drive from MBR to GPT if possible without losing Apps data and settings.

4.) Magic? - other suggestions would be appreciated.

My grand daughter is paranoid that any of the above will cause loss of data/settings, and I am trying to be her knight in shining armour, with arts college starting in a few days.

USB install XP onto old laptop

Download the boot disk setup, create all 6 boot disks. Insert XP CD, and run off the boot disk, and follow the on screen steps. Then the boot disk will access the XP CD to finish up the install.

I dont think there is a way to install XP via usb if your computer does not support usb booting in the first place.

 

BitLocker Key works with System Disk but not Data Disk

I have a similar question as others concerning the Bitlocker encryption but my problem seems a little different than any I have read about.

My computer is running Win 10 and has an SSD System disk and a second SATA Data disk. I wanted to make an Image of the SSD System so I turned off the computer, removed the Data disk and installed another blank Sata disk to copy the Image to. After turning the Computer on again, I turned off BitLocker for the System disk (it was never on for the Data disks), made the Image file then turned the computer back off again. I removed the Sata disk then started up the computer, turned BitLocker back on for the SSD System disk and saved the Recovery File to a USB Flash Disk. After it finished Encrypting, I turned the computer back off again, removed the USB flash disk and reinstalled my Sata fixed Data Disk. After again turning the computer on everything looked fine until I tried to access my data and was asked for the recovery key for drive D:, my Data disk. I was not so happy that my Data disk was locked but entered in the recovery key and received the message that 'the key does not match this drive'. It was then that I noticed that the Key ID listed did not match to my recovery key, or to the older one from when I made an image a few weeks ago. Is there anyway for me to recover the data if I do not have a recovery key? Bob
