Windows 10: Headphones not working, sound comes out of speakers when plugged in

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 15 500 Gaming laptop with an audio issue. When plugging in any headphones, there used to be a popup that asked which device I just plugged in, which doesn't happen anymore. I have reinstalled the Realtek audio drivers by uninstalling with Driver Easy and reinstalling from the Dell website. I also uninstalled the NVIDIA audio driver to reinstall, but I couldn't reinstall it, which didn't seem to have much of a difference (if it's important, please tell me where to find the drivers so that I can reinstall it). I also tried plugging in a cheap 6 dollar USB microphone, which works normally. Is this a hardware problem (the headphone jack is broken?) or one driver-related? I've tested two pairs of earbuds that both worked before this, but I don't remember anything I did that could have caused this. This computer also has only one audio output called Speakers / Headphones, so I can't tell if it's not recognizing it or just not functional. Any help will be appreciated, and thanks in advance.(I'll edit the post if I forgot anything.)

Speakers playing when headphones are plugged in


I have an HP laptop with windows 10. When my headphones are plugged in, the speakers are still playing. When I go to sounds, the only device listed is the speakers. How can I silence the speakers when the headphones are plugged in.

When I unplug my headphones, the sound does not automatically come back through the speakers.

The speakers are external speakers connected through the speaker output. The headphones are connected by USB port.

There should be a simple way to specify that when the headphones are plugged in, they should be the default. When the headphones are not plugged in, the speakers should be the default. Alas, there are a jumble of settings that do not clearly describe what
they do so I am baffled by how to make this work.

Question: How should Windows be configured so that when the headphones are plugged in, the sound comes through the headphones and when the headphones are not plugged in, the sound comes through the speakers?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
