    Hi Keith,

    to keep license you need to replace motherboard by warranty. Sorry that are the license terms. If this will be warranty replacement please remember technician to do steps necessary for license keeping.

  3. Remove Key License from old Motherboard

    • If your copy of Windows 10 is OEM( came preinstalled on the computer it can not be transferred. The License died with the old motherboard. If it is retail (bought from Microsoft store or another Retailer ) it can be transferred. If you still have issues
      I would contact Microsoft support and they will help activate.

    replace motherboard and re-install W10

    If you are replacing the motherboard and if you had a Windows OEM license for that motherboard then you need to buy Windows license key.

    The OEM license key is burned into the ROM of the motherboard. If you replace the old motherboard with a new one then you need to buy a Windows license even if the other parts are still the same.

    New motherboard is judged as new computer.
