Windows 10: Hello, latest Windows Update causing SD card to get stuck on ReadOnly mode

HelloA customer of mine installed some Windows Update and suddenly his SD card was stuck on ReadOnly mode, now we know it's a specific software issue with Windows, as the SD card works just fine when you attach it to an external harddrive and attach the external harddrive to the PC, and also it works on PCs who doesnt have these latest Windows Update, and of course the lock mechanism is unlocked on the card duhWhat we've tried so farRegedit registry with WriteProtected and value set to 0Local policies where we put multiple policies like Block This PC to write/access removable harddrive as in

Windows 10 not reading SD Cards

I would suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Method 1: Please check your Windows updates (including optional updates).

• 
  At the Start screen, type
  Windows Update.
  
• 
  Select Check for Update.
  
• 
  Download and Install the latest Windows Updates.
  
  Method 2: Check in compatibility mode.
  
  Download the drivers from manufacture's website for Windows 10, if there no drivers available for Windows 10, download the latest driver from the manufacturer’s website and try installing it in compatibility
  mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.
  
  Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.
  

• 
  Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
  
• 
  Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘properties’.
  
• 
  Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box
  ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation.
  
• 
  Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
  

Method 3:

Please check if the Micro SD card is listed in disk management.

• Press Windows key + X
• Click on disk management
• Check if the Micro SD card is listed

I cannot open my SD card from the SD slot since I downloaded the new Windows 10.

• Are you talking about Windows 10 anniversary update?
• How about connecting other external USB devices?
• Is this issue specific to the SD card?
• Did you try connecting the SD card on different computer?

Most of the problems arises with the incompatible drivers. Suggest you to check and install all latest drivers for Windows 10 from Manufacturer's website. You can search them using your device model number. Most probably
this should fix the issue.

Coming to the SD card issue, suggest you to check connecting it on different computer to see if it works fine there. Sometimes problem with the SD card or SD slot causes this kind of behavior. This might give us the clue on the
root cause of the issue.

SD card failure

I would need to ask few questions so I can isolate your concern properly. Kindly answer the following:

• Did you get a specific error message?
• What are the troubleshooting steps you have done so far?
• What's the current build of your computer? Press Windows key + R and then type winver.
• Did you try to run a full system scan using your anti-virus? Can you tell us the result?
• Does your SD card has a write protection?

Meanwhile, you may try these troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter. Open Settings> Update & Security> Troubleshoot> Hardware and Devices> Run the troubleshooter.

Step 2: Check SD Card in Disk Management.

1. Open Disk Management.
2. Your SD card will appear as a removable disk.
3. Check if it has a drive letter.
4. If it does not show anything, right click the SD card and then select “Change Drive Letter and Paths”.
5. Click “Add” and select a drive letter, then click “OK”.

Step 3: Update SD card driver.

1. Open Device manager.
2. Find your SD card and right click it.
3. Select Properties.
4. Click the driver tab and then select Update Driver.

Note: You may need to use a keyboard and mouse to connect to your laptop to perform the said steps if it does not allow on tablet mode.
