    RAID vs AHCI mode

    IDE = the old standard
    AHCI = IDE + NCQ and hotswap support
    RAID = same as AHCI, but the ability to use RAID modes.

    If you change a drive in/out of RAID, it has to be formatted. So yes, you have to reinstall windows if you use RAID at a later date. You do NOT need RAID to have multiple drives.

    RAID vs AHCI mode

    Hello, first, sorry for the late reply *Frown Hello, should I reinstall window after changing boot mode from Raid to AHCI? :(
    Many thanks to all!
    Then If I don't have more than one disk, the RAID mode is useless and should I use the AHCI? And if in the future I want to add another disk, then should I enable RAID mode and reinstall Windows?
    And yeah the bootup time is faar slower because the mobo have to initialize the controller ... :-(and it used a RAID0/JBOD mode...

    How to change from raid to ahci?

    Hi IB. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

    What makes you think it's in RAID mode? On some BIOS's RAID is also SATA so if you don't have hardware RAID merging multiple hard drives it is likely set to SATA. But you are right that AHCI is the optimal SATA controller setting for Windows 10 and later.

    If you do into BIOS/UEFI Settings can you find the SATA settings to look for SATA controller mode? If you find these settings then you can try changing it, if it starts and loads the AHCI driver, that's fine, but it most likely won't start so you'll have to change it back. Most often it requires reinstalling WIndows to change to AHCI mode.

    More important is if it's the modern UEFI BIOS from the past ten years and that Windows is installed to UEFI mode, with Secure Boot enabled, and Windows Boot Manager set first in Boot order. Installing in Legacy or CSM mode on a UEFI BIOS is like buying a new car and disabling all of the safety and performance features.

    It also normally requires reinstalling Windows to change to UEFI from Legacy/CSM, but there is a conversion method here that seems to be working for many: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-convert-mbr-...

    Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
