  1. [Help] How do I prevent a software update from changing a registry key ?

    Hey folks,

I was wondering how to prevent Windows/a software update from changing specific registry keys, namely ones that handle the location of file type icons.

I've recently discovered FileTypesMan, a piece of software that makes it pretty convenient to change the default icon for a file extension. I've had a lot of fun making my file explorer look pretty and consistent by making my own custom icons based on Adobe's Spectre system (and they even scale properly !).

Thing is, it seems every next software update (Calibre, Notepads, Word, etc...) resets my changes, and when updating Office, that's a lot of file extensions that need to be manually edited again.

I like my icons, but I also like to have up to date software. So I was wondering if it's possible to make the registry keys that handle the icon paths impossible for windows/the system/the updates to change them back ? When looking at registry permissions, I see the following users/groups I can edit :

    • All application packages
    • Unknown Account
    • Restricted
    • System
    • Myself
    • Administrators

But I'm lost on which ones to edit, as I'm somewhat inexperienced when it comes to the registry (which I usually don't tamper with, but in this case it's only cosmetic so I figure it's safe). Now this is a somewhat specific issue, and it's not life or death, more like minor annoyance that I'd like to eliminate, but if anyone could help me or give me some pointers, I'd appreciate it. Cheers and merry christmas !

Prevent application to create a registry key

Hi, is it possible to prevent certain application to create a registry key in Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software registry location? That registry key causes some problems - when I delete it manually problems are solved but every so often key gets created as soon as application is started.

    ATITool registry key

    Hello,

During ATITool installation, the following registry key was added to my registry:

    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{85b5ddd0-e090-4b15-bdf2-a443a3ca0b66}"

After uninstalling the program, this key remained. I tried to delete it through the registry editor but it returned the following error:

"Cannot delete {85b5ddd0-e090-4b15-bdf2-a443a3ca0b66}: Error while deleting key."

I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit by the way. I also tried to change permissions for the key and deleting in safe mode, but neither of those worked either.

Any ideas on how i can remove this key? Any help is appreciated, thanks.
