    [Win 7 Pro x64 > Win 10 upgrade: 30 Sep.]

Im trying to get control of Updates which seems to be quite a challenge in Win 10. Despite delaying Updates theyre still occurring.

All of the above Updates were discovered via: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance\Reliability Monitor
Interestingly, none of the above listed Updates excepting for Realtek and Nvidia Display are found in either Update History or Uninstall Updates. [Even more interesting, I cannot find these updates in the Windows Update Catalogue.] Whilst I am interested in the WebpImageExtension the rest of the MS entries on the list do not appear to me to be necessary for a running smooth system. Unfortunately driver related updates (red background) are much more problematic

Ive made the following Update related changes via the group policy editor:

Despite enabling Do not include drivers in Updates driver updates are still occurring. The Realtek sound control panel overwrote the one that came with my motherboard with the following result:

The Nvidia Display update was much more catastrophic. Immediately following the update the screen went black with message: PLEASE POWER DOWN AND CONNECT THE PCIe POWER CABLE FOR THIS GRAPHICS CARD. Initially the computer wouldnt even post when attempting to reboot; after 30 minutes it did post and boot into Windows but Photoshop and VirtualBox both heavily reliant on a properly functioning GPU had become unstable. Analysis strongly indicated driver conflicts as root cause of functional degradation and intermittent system freezes requiring power off and cold boots.

After a couple of days the system degraded to the point of losing video signal to the display within 2-3 minutes of booting into the Desktop. After restoring my Win 7 backup and checking the culprit drivers via Device Manager I discovered MS had actually updated my Nvidia drivers with a version older than what was functioning properly.

After restoring the Win 10 backup I attempted to Roll Back the driver. Unfortunately, instead of reverting to the properly functioning newer Nvidia driver Windows rolled back to a MS generic AMD based display driver. Using a utility called DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) I purged the system of all Nvidia components and reinstall the proper driver.

The system is currently functional but I am very concerned about getting yet another update that causes this knd of merry-go-round.
Are there specific registry keys available that can be used to avoid these destructive updates???

Thanx in advance for any help & your time & expertise,
Poised on the brink of returning to Win 7.*Banghead

  2. The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

    Hi Eric,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

This issue might be occurred due to corrupted Windows services and updates.

    • Since from when are you facing this issue?
You may login to other account and check if the RegEdit works.

I suggest you to modify the registry to increase the default time-out value for the service control manager. To increase this value to 60 seconds, follow these steps:

    • Press Windows Key + R, type regedit, and hit
      enter.
    • Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
    • In the right pane, locate the ServicesPipeTimeout entry.

    • On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click
      DWORD Value.

    • Type ServicesPipeTimeout, and then press ENTER.
    • Right-click Services PipeTimeout, and then click Modify.

a request for device descriptor request failed

Maybe it's time to step back from the current efforts, and start over. I suggest you read over this excellent tutorial and try all of its steps: [Solved] Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) for Windows 10 - Driver Easy. The one that may provide you with some easy relief is the one where you uninstall the device whose descriptor is failing, reboot, and see what happens when device enumeration recurs during boot-up. If you're lucky, it will fix itself.
