Windows 10: Help to Install Windows 7, dual boot with Windows 10

Currently I'm running Windows 10 fall creators update Pro-64 bit. For some unavoidable reason I need to install Windows 7 Ultimate alongside Windows 10 (dual boot). But whenever I'm trying to install windows 7 it's saying "Your computer is already running newer version of Windows". How do I get past of that?

You may want to install Windows 10 in another partition which is also called dual boot along with Windows 7 and check if everything works fine with Windows 10 while you are still using Windows 7.

Unplug your W10 drive, then Install W7. When that's done, plug the W10 drive back in. You may come across some issues when you try to install W7.

You should not have any other drives hooked up when you instal another OS anyway, that way each OS is independent from each other. Then just set your default OS in the Bios.

When you want to use the other OS, use the one time boot menu key (usually F8) to bring up the boot menu and choose the other OS drive.

To dual install Windows 7 and Windows 10 you first need to disable Secure Boot as Windows 7 don't support this feature.
You need a unallocated storage space to install Windows 7 on this unallocated free storage space.
You need to install Windows 7 64-bit version if Windows 10 booting from GPT partition.
Windows 7 64-bit needs at least 20 GB of free storage space more is better.
You can shrink any partition to gain unallocated storage space size of the storage space is up to you.
You can manage (shrink) hard disks from Disk Management console open it by typing Diskmgmt.msc into Start Menu.
After you have installed Windows 7 on a unallocated storage space you have created you will be force to boot into Windows 7 to make Windows 10 bootable you need to use EasyBCD utility to make Windows 10 bootable.

 

If you want to install Windows 7 on same drive, I recommend you use a virtual hard drive - easy to do, and does not create new partitiions:

1) Create a directory to hold virtual hard drive e.g. C:\win7

2) From disk management, create virtual hard drive e.g. c:\win7\win7.vhdx

I recommend, type VHDX, expandable, and minimum size of say 50 GB (adjust as appropriate)

3) Ensure secure boot is off in bios

4) Boot from windows 7 installation usb flash drive or dvd

5) at first screen, press shift+f10 to get to command prompt

6) Type following commands

diskpart

select vdisk file=c:\win7\win7.vhdx

attach vdisk

exit

exit (yes twice)

No carry on and install windows 7 in vhd, and boot menu will be updated so you can select either 7 or 10.

Only slightly irritating thing is the dual boot menu is old style text, not newer style graphics.
This is easily fixed with a bcdedit command or using tool like easybcd.
