Windows 10: Help trying to reinstall windows 10 after hard drive crash

I had a laptop that came with windows 8 pro installed. When Microsoft offered the free upgrade to windows 10, I accepted that offer. I have no original windows 10 disk. I kept the installation regularly updated, but never made a rescue disk. When my hard drive crashed, I ran manufacturer diagnostics and it said the drive was corrupted beyond recovery. It still spun, so I immediately scanned it with a professional data retrieval software program and made an image of it. the scan revealed specific damaged sectors with data in them unrecoverable. I ordered a new SSD drive and my laptop manufacturer sent me original windows 8 pro OS and driver disks. I successfully installed all the drivers and the OS, so now my question.


Is there any way I can find my windows 10 key on the damaged drive, or some way to re-install windows 10, or do I now have to buy a new OS and key? If I have to, then "it is what is is," but I'd like to try a recovery. There are a lot of things on that old drive I want to try to recover. Thanks for your help.

Reinstall Windows 10 to new hard drive

• Are you trying to reinstall Windows 8 or Windows 10?
• If you already upgraded to Windows 10, were you able to create a new copy of the recovery drive?

We suggest creating a new copy of the recovery drive and then follow the steps provided by Andre Da Costa above this thread.

Thank you for your response with the current status of the issue.

To assist you better, please provide us the below information

• Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the external hard drive on the computer?
• Are you logged into the Administrator Account while assigning the driver letter to the external hard drive?

I recommend you to follow the steps below to update all the pending Windows updates and also try to reinstall the hard drive driver in the Device Manager. Check if it helps.

Step 1: I suggest you to update all the pending Windows updates in the computer and check if it helps.

1. Click on Start Menu.

2. Then select Settings.

3. Choose Update & security >
Windows Update >Check for updates. Install any available updates and restart your PC if required.

Step 2: I recommend you to uninstall and reinstall the Hard drive as suggested in the previous post. Also you can run Hardware and Device troubleshooter.

Step 3: Then try to boot the computer in safe mode and check if the hard drive is getting recgonized in it or not.
