Help --Where's the download ISO using media creation tool

    Hi there

I downloaded the ISO using Ms's creation tool -- I selected create ISO.

After the download it prompted me to burn to a DVD -- I didn't want that because I was going to use rufus to create a number of USB sticks so I exited the program.

Now I can't find the ISO -- any idea where Ms stored this.

    Cheers

    Hi,

From where did you download the ISO file?

I would suggest you to refer to the link to download the ISO file for Windows 10:

    Windows 10 herunterladen

Let us know if it helps.

I was trying to create media on USB flash drive for windows installation on my other PC using windows media creation tool. It downloaded all the iso file and then it started the progress bar. Meanwhile my internet went down. There was an error and media
creation tool was closed. Now when i restarted it, it can't seem to locate where is that ISO file already downloaded.

    Hey Jimbo,

Have you checked all the usual places like Appdata or ProgramData / Temp / %temp% or the download folder?

It gets stored where ever you choose. When I was downloading the ISO yesterday I chose for it to go to an external drive, drive F. It asks you in advance before you download, so you just have to remember where you chose.

    Hi there

Have you actually done this ????

Here's what you get after it asks you to choose between USB and ISO. No prompt for download location.

    Cheers

Help --Where's the download ISO using media creation tool

Do a search by file size in File Explorer.

    Open File Explorer.

First click View and tick show Hidden Items. Now hidden items will be visible.

Click on drive C: (or other drive letter) to search entire drive or a directory to search in that range.

In the search box, on the upper right, type...

size: (make sure to enter the colon sign)

A drop down menu will appear with the following file size ranges...

    Empty (0 KB)
    Tiny (0 - 10 KB)
    Small (10 - 100 KB)
    Medium (100 KB - 1 MB)
    Large (1 - 16 MB)
    Huge (16 - 128 MB)
    Gigantic (> 128 MB)

Click on a file size range to start a search. In this case "Gigantic (> 128 MB)".
Search will list all files on drive C: greater than 128 MB in size.

The 3.2GB ISO file should then appear on the search list.

    Hi there

I ran the Create for other machines

No download location prompt --just started downloading.

here's the sequence and then as per previous post the download starts. But where to ????.

@Antelope -- checked by size and date -- NOTHING !!! that is remotely recogniseable.

    Cheers

I used the Microsoft tool. I seems to ignore a request to download an ISO if you have not upgraded. It will then proceed to run an upgrade on your computer. After running an upgrade, the Microsoft Tool will then honor a request for an ISO and request Language, ISO type and location where to save it. So the tool is kind of buggy.

    Hi there

What it actually does is prompt to burn a DVD after it has done the download --if you end the job at this point (because you don't want a physical ISO) then that's where the problem occurs - it probably deletes the entire 3GB or whatever of download.

I don't see where a previous poster got any prompt as to where to store the download. I'm not saying it's B/S but I don't think he could have been running the Ms tool. I'm on Insider build 10240 BTW X-64 PRO GB version.

Lucky I have fast Internet and no "Capped monthly allowance" otherwise this stuff would cost me over 10 GB's in downloads -- 3 computers etc !!!!!.

BTW if you start the tool again it goes through the whole download process AGAIN --IMO it should be intelligent enough to check if the latest version has already been downloaded !!!!!.

You shouldn't have to update your system to get the ISO if you want W10 for another machine -- I am running the last Insider build but I want to install RTM on another machine which is why I ran the tool to get the RTM version. I want to use to upgrade on a few W8 / W8.1 machines without having to do a separate download on each machine !!! They all have valid keys etc.

    Cheers

I am a Windows Insider and already had 10240 on my pc for about 2 weeks, but decided to upgrade to the the 29 July version of Windows 10 and also download an ISO for a later clean install.

When you run an upgrade with the tool, at the end of the upgrade it leaves a hidden, 5.79GB folder on your pc that wasn't there before:

    C:\$Windows.~WM

When you request a download, it downloads the ISO type you requested. After the download reaches 100% it gives you the option to burn an ISO or make a USB.

At that point, you can save the ISO to a hard disk folder, which I did, and not burn it at that point. The default name of the ISO is, "Windows.ISO", it is 3.2GB in size.

    The Home x64 and Pro x64, 29 July version, ISO's are slightly different sizes. Home x64 - 3,269,120 Kb; Pro x64 - 3,255,232 Kb.

I used Rufus on the ISO to successfully make a bootable USB instead of downloading the USB from Microsoft.

I had the latest version of Speccy diagnostic tools on my PC but it disappeared after installing the 29 July version of Windows on my computer. Everything else on my machine is intact, but I guess Windows 10 didn't like the latest version of Speccy (I downloaded the latest version of Speccy fresh last week).

Help --Where's the download ISO using media creation tool

    Hi there

That must be the reason -- I didn't do an update -- didn't see any reason to --and in any case windows update said my system was actually up to date anyway. !!!

Ms could have documented this process better or just let people manually download the ISO's -- it's easy enough to create USB bootable media with Rufus -- works fine.

@Rocky -- seems that the UPGRADE process works differently to when you just select to create media for another machine (without first doing an upgrade).

    anyway thanks for your replies.

    Cheers

Not sure if I need to keep this file?

When I do a "This PC", "Properties", the Windows Product ID changed after the upgrade,
even though it said my pc was up to date before the upgrade.

The Product ID for my Windows 10 Pro, with the 29 July upgrade, is now "00330-00000-AA792".
