Help, Windows Installer failing to install updates, what can I do?

Windows Installer is failing to install update(s) correctly and I do not know what the underlying issue is. The problem has been ongoing since December 2017. Is there anything I should do or can I wait for Microsoft to rectify the problem?

Currently, the updates installs to about 48% complete and restarts the computer, and after restarting the computer the update disapears into a blank black screen.

Cold starting the computer is the only option from here as the OS does not appear to be doing anything with the update installation. When the computer restarts, the Installer is stuck at installing at 41%.

Cold starting the computer once again makes the Installer undo the install, before the user can log on. When at the desktop, the Update Service checks for more updates and tries to re-install the failed update. Thus the Windows Update Service and Installer are stuck in a loop failing to install a downloaded update.

The Windows 10 Update Assistant also issues a warning that security updates cannot be installed until the most recent version of Windows 10 is installed.

    Computer: ASUS CM6730
    CPU: Pentium G2030 3Ghz
    BIOS: 2.7
    RAM: 4GB
    OS Version: 1607
    OS Build: 14393.2007
    Update(s): KB4056254; KB4057142; KB4054517 (Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709).
    Security: Microsoft Security Essentials

  3. Windows 10 Not installing !

I have Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 , installed on my Desktop. On checking Windows update history I note that there have been 13 failed attempts to install Windows 10. The error code is 824201C. I have reserved Windows 10 and can see the files
being downloaded but then it fails to install. What is going on? There does not seem to be anything with this error code on the forum. Please help? Thanks Iain

Hi, first very quick observation is you have Norton installed.

Two of the basic recommendations are to uninstall 3rd party AV and disconnect any unnecessary peripherals, esp.
    wireless.

Note- you can edit posts- this can make it easier to read..

Can you confirm you can actually log in? Re-reading your first post suggests not, but that you've run chkdsk & SFC /SCANNOW suggests you can.

Please post a screenshot of your partitions using Minitool Partition Wizard.

Note the errors towards the end of the BlueBox.log.

Uninstall Norton, try those steps, and try a manual upgrade.
(Download a Win 10 iso, create a bootable Win 10 medium - which can be used for some repair functions- log in, and start setup.exe from your Win 10 medium (USB disk, DVD e.g.)

That has an explanation - Norton licence has expired and no longer exists in Programs and Features. Perhaps what you see are remnants ?

Yes sorry if I mumbled in my OP, but I can log in after Trusted Installer has failed and undoes the failed installation. See paragraph four of OP.

Partition E: I created myself. Partitions * must have been created when clean installing Windows 10?

I don't understand these errors(!), are they because files missing in folders, and would the missing files themselves be deleted when using the Reset Windows Update Components batch file (from this tutorial Reset Windows Update in Windows 10) ??

I ran DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth, and that reports no store corruption detected.

I'm working through these suggestions ...

Note: Ultimately some people find a solution by doing an in-place upgrade repair install of build 1607 (which keeps all programs and data and most settings). Sometimes doing that ends up as being far quicker than diagnosing and trying things.. always provided it does then mean you can you upgrade!

Yes, I guess Norton refs are leftover registry keys. Are you using a 3rd party AV?

Your disk looks ok, although it could be helpful to see the rightmost column.

The 450Mb recovery partition relates to your 1607 build, the larger one is part of the upgrade attempt and would be the new one.

Before you try upgrading again please:
Go to your C: drive in file explorer

Click View and check the box that says "Hidden Files"
There will be a folder named "$WINDOWS. ~ BT"
Rename that folder to anything you like, or simply delete it.
    Attempt the update again.

Alas, the machine will neither boot, update, or repair now; it is totally lost in limbo now.

I think I am going to need to clean install 10 all over again.

I must have selected the wrong option on the Media Creation Tool, as I think I selected 'Upgrade this PC now' - anyhow my choice did not work and the machine is now in an unbootable loop, and I am without an iso to do a manual clean install.

Perhaps I can get 1709 via a manual clean install?

    Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

Hi, that's unfortunate, and is why we continually advocate using disk imaging routinely to avoid catastrophe and give yourself a quick way of recovering without clean installing in many cases. You can start doing that immediately after achieving a clean install. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for disk image sets. Image all the partitions for Windows, and any other partitions and disks.

You have at least the following options (without considering how to recover your PC as is):
    1. You can recover anything you haven't backed up from your disk e.g. using a bootable disk you an download from the top of the Software and Apps section here (Kyhi's boot disk).
    2. You can create a Win 10 bootable medium
    - using a similar PC (32 or 64 bits, same base language) - making sure you select the correct option when using media creation tool.
    - by direct download e.g. see
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums
    post #3
    - or I can give you a URL for a site which hosts these.

There are steps that you can make to recover the files as above.
There may be some additional options to repair/recover the os/drive.

    The computer was having crashes.
    The upgrade failures were seen.

These were some of the findings in the logs:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8024200D: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709.
Windows failed fast startup with error status 0xC000007B.
    Crash dump initialization failed!
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0xC1900107: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709.
Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
The previous system shutdown at 20:18:03 on ?03/?02/?2018 was unexpected.
The Update Orchestrator Service for Windows Update service did not shut down properly after receiving a pre-shutdown control.
The Interactive Services Detection service terminated with the following error:
    Incorrect function.
