    Help with changing active partition

Several months ago I upgraded my SSD to a new larger one (Disk 0) and kept the smaller one for storage (Disk 3). I did a clean install of Win 10 on the new SSD (Disk 0) that I had previously formatted. When I did the clean install, I neglected to delete the partition ending up without a MSR partition. When I installed the AU it created a Reserved Partition, all good. However, I noted that the old SSD (Disk 3) is still marked as active. I’m assuming that Disk 0 should be the active partition? Am I correct and if so what’s the best way to do this? Thanks for your help.

  2. Active Sync cannot work on my pc

    Hi,

Hope you can advice me. Thanks!

I just bought a Samsung Omina II 8000 phone and have problems trying to connect to my PC for active sync. The USB is connected but it just fails to connect. I am a VPN user and already changed my firewall to allow active sync but it still doesn't work.

When I downloaded the Active Sync software it started to connect to my phone and here's the order:

Connecting --> Active Sync cannot connect to the Windows Powered device. To troubleshoot, please click etc.

After I troubleshoot, I got the following message:

"Unable to establish a connection between the PC and the device. Get up-to-date solutions to common connection problems. Please click the following link:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=65257

    --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---

No additional known issues have been found.

If you are still experiencing problems please send the results to Microsoft to help improve future versions."

    Here's the detailed log file.

    Hi sofine409,

Let me just give you some food for thought until one of our experts steps in and give you a final "step by step" solution. Now, for the record, I have two drives with active partitions as well but one is an external drive. I also have a different partition structure as shown below:

Help with changing active partition [IMG]

My C drive has an active partition (even though it is not shown as such) and my Z drive also has an active partition. I'm not sure how it got that way because I cleaned the drive using diskpart and then created a simple NTFS volume and there it was.

Anyway, I would first disconnect that Disk #3 to make sure you can boot OK and then, if so, you might consider using Diskpart to mark the drive inactive; however, I'm not sure what that might do to any existing contents (if anything). FYI, I have no trouble using my external drive (marked as active) to save backup images or copy data to it so I'm leaving mine alone. It may be best to wait for a GURU but I just wanted to give you my uneducated opinion. Good luck!

If you look carefully at your screen shot, Disk 0 does say active. Oddly, looking in my disk management window....mine does not say active. Mmmm. I wonder if UEFI has anything to do with it. Right clicking the drive; the option to mark drive as active is grayed out.

Hi aardvark and OldMike65, Thanks for your responses.
I had a little trouble unplugging the original mSSD (Disk 3) to test if Disk 0 could boot on its own. After some searching and head scratching, I finally realized that the mSSD (Disk 3) was part of the original hybrid Seagate drive that Dell installed in the PC (XPS 8700). When I disconnected everything except Disk 0, I was able to boot up with no problems. That's a good thing. The other good thing is that I have absolutely nothing stored on the old mSSD (Disk 3) so it looks like using Diskpart should be OK. Here is what I plan to do, please tell me if it looks ok?
    Open a CMD window.
    DISKPART
    LIST DISK
SELECT Disk 3 (the disk with 238 GB)
    LIST PARTITION
    SELECT Partition 1
    INACTIVE
    EXIT

    Help with changing active partition

    @aardvark
FYI, you don't have 2 drives with active partitions.
If you install Windows with GPT partition scheme. Your Boot partition is 100MB EFI System formatted as FAT32, where your BCD (Boot Configuration Data) resides in. There's no such thing as Active partition with GPT disk. EFI firmware looks for the EFI System to boot from.

Active partition can only be marked as Active if your disk is initialized with MBR. With GPT disk, if you try to mark "Active" on any partition with diskpart, you would get an error.

Having said that. Your Windows was installed using GPT partition scheme, your Z drive is a MBR disk and if it is a data disk then it should not be marked as "Active". However, If your Z drive contains another OS and is MBR then it must be marked as Active in order to boot from.
Here's an example, Windows 10 was installed on Disk 0 with GPT scheme. Windows 7 was installed on disk 1 with MBR so it must be marked as Active on the System Reserved partition. This configuration is not dual boot. In order to boot Windows 7, I must change the boot order in the BIOS or use the Boot Menu for one time boot. Hope this helps !!!

@topgundcp: Thanks for flexing your technical prowess but I still maintain that I have an active partition. It doesn't actually have to say active to be active. So, I don't want to play on words here and I will provide a link to a developer (who you always make reference to as your hero of sorts) where he sums it all up in a simple sentence:

Win 10 no active partition - Windows 10 Forums

I am sorry but I'd never reference any body as my hero, I'd praise him if his answer is correct. However, in this case, he's dead wrong by saying it as Active. The correct answer was the post after his by genet:
Win 10 no active partition - Windows 10 Forums
The Boot process on a GPT disk is controlled by the EFI firmware ie. Windows Boot Manager. Period.
