    Help with maintenance/updating my laptop

I have a Inspiron 17R It has a I7 processor etc and I love it it runs great, I bought it back in 2012 and through the years its gotten slower on me, im fine with that since now I use it to store photos and work on programs etc.

My main issue: is that right now it just started having trouble reading my SD card for my camera. I have 2 seperate USB devices I place my SD card into to transfer photos and earlier only 30 photos that were still on my card after a previous transfer showed up and not the 60 new ones that I took. After I deleted the 30 on there I unplugged the device and plugged it back in and it showed me 30 more new ones but not the last set. After repeating the process my PC now states that there is nothing on my SD card since I looked through all of the folders and there empty but it shows about 2 gb being used on the USB. The pictures/videos are on there but I cant access them either through file explorer and our all so wonderful photos app.

Background: I did some looking and it said somewhere that the usb Device descriptor failed (code43) I dont know of this is related since out of my 4 usb ports 1 doesnt work/fails a lot and one is the newer (at the time) 2.0. I dont know if the code its throwing is for the port that doesnt work but it specifically said USB device so I wanted to put that info here just in case. I tried two different devices in all 4 ports and nothing. Im not sure if theres a newer update/driver since I think I updated it not too long ago and it should have taken care of the usb drivers as well.

I have 8gb of ram but it says only about 1.6gb is being used if that helps as well.
