Windows 10: Here’s how you can block update to Windows 10 version 1809

Microsoft has been working on issuing new builds to Fast Ring Insiders for its next major update Windows 10 October 2018 Update also known as Redstone 5.

The company yesterday released the public version of the update to all Windows 10 users globally. The update will be released in stages as is always the case with major releases, to fix any issues found during the roll-out process on PCs.

However, if you are not interested in downloading the update on day one of its release, fearing it may contain some bugs and issues which could break your PCs, you can delay the update. But you need to follow certain steps if you are a Windows 10 Pro users and depends on the SKU.

Microsoft is expected to push the October 2018 Update via Windows Update and if you are on Windows 10 Pro, then you will find a dedicated setting to defer the updates.

To find the settings, you would need to go to Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update>Advanced options. You will find two options Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) and Semi-Annual Channel and then configure the number of days for update deferral.

These options will be available from the drop-down menu and you can also delay quality updates like Cumulative Updates. But delaying cumulative updates is not always a good idea since these contain security fixes which need to be installed on your PC.

To complete the process, you would need to go through a reboot which would save the changes and will block the installation of Windows 10 October 2018 Update on your system automatically.

My only suggestion is to roll back to version 1803. And then block 1809.

Windows 10 1809 is just a day old. My suggestion is to hold on till the first cumulative updates arrive.

 

Microsoft blocks Windows 10 April Update for Intel SSD 600p Series

Microsoft is blocking some Intel SSDs from installing the April 2018 Update after discovering an incompatibility issue that causes performance and stability issues. In short, the problem was explained by Microsoft as: “When attempting to upgrade to Window 10 April 2018 Update select devices with certain Intel SSDs may enter a UEFI screen reboot or crash repeatedly.” Microsoft says that this issue has no workaround and that those that have attempted to update Windows 10 to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update should revert back to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version 1709.

Unfortunately, the announcement by Microsoft fails to list what specific Intel SSD models are having issues with the OS update. We contacted Intel and discovered that the Intel SSD 600p Series of client drives that was first introduced to the market in 2016 is the most popular drive that is having issues.
