Windows 10: HG's PC upgrade

If you can give ram a bit higher voltage, it usually stabilizes them specially if there's more of them. RAM sticks, do NOT use pencil eraser on contacts, it leaves gummy deposit and can make contacts even worse. I use just a clean piece of printing paper, doubled over so I can hold it between fingers and rub both sides at same time. A little of rubbing alcohol can be used to wet paper but not too much so it drips, it can dissolve lacquer that insulates components. Also have to make sure you emptied all static electricity before and during cleaning.
I just spent couple of hours disassembling my main computer and changing PSU. Looks like it breathes much better now because I upgraded PSU from 400W Chieftek to Sharkoon 660W.

It's an Acer Al1917W LCD monitor. After reading up on it, it seems to be an inverter problem. I'll have to open up to see. May not be worth it to fix, but we'll see.

Ok. So I went down to the local thrift shop and found an older Phillips monitor to get me by. It turns out to be a pretty good monitor for $20. Uglier than heck, though! *Tongue

Booted up and it's a go! Trying to install the ISO on a USB, but it doesn't list the thumb drive in the list. Ugh! Scrapped that for now and burning to a DVD.

I'll get 10 installed even if it kills me! *Biggrin

After reading Brink's tutorial on dual booting, I just mounted the ISO within Windows 8.1 partition and am installing from there. Lol! Burning it was useless except to have a copy.

All went very well. About a half hour all said and done. Signed in with MS account, apps loaded including Bing Desktop with today's pic, and favorites loaded. Start Screen should be just as in 8.1 once I get rid of this ugly Start Menu.

Now to tweak and discover.....

First thoughts > Yuck! Got it to use Start Screen instead of the Start Menu. Then to discover that not all my Store apps were installed as a phase of the installation said. It just installed the Store and MSN apps. My Store apps are registered in All Apps, but not installed. Then after installing them I have to pin to Start Screen. Then I'll have to rearrange all the tiles. This was all automatically performed when upgrading from 8 to 8.1 or a reinstall. Not a real big deal, but somewhat of a back step so far as I'm concerned.

I took a break. If I can't get this to boot to Start Screen, this OS won't be for me. I realize that it's just a preview though.

 

Most of my apps installed, but some didn't, not sure if it was the default ones that did

Do you have syncing turned on via your MS account, with this on it should pick up the start screen layout from your 8 and show the screen as it was

As far as I can tell mine syncs everything nicely between 8 & 10

 

Yes, you have to make sure sync is turned on. As a security measure, you will have to trust your pc. They will email you a code, enter it and the sync goes in.

 

By a strange coinkidink, I have used exact model for years and same thing was happening, first it would not stay on more than few minutes and then light would go out. Took it apart , changed couple of suspect capacitors but didn't help. Took it to service and it was repaired by changing one fluorescent tube for about 10 bucks.

 

Yes. I performed that during installation.
