Windows 10: Hi, I am having trouble opening any kind of text, doc files including word docs etc.

The system can not open any kind of text files including web word documents. I tried to delete and reinstall notepad/ wordpad in the optional features setting but it says install failed. Also I tried to reset this pc, I can only download the system from local drives

many thanks for responding and trying to help me. the problem is that all of the docs in various folders that were word docs are no longer word docs - they only open on wordpad (and so parts of the docs cannot be seen). does anyone know why that would
happen?

I actually don't know if I have a current subscription to office.

If you right click on one of the doc files & choose open with is Word listed?

Do you have a current subscription to Office?

 

Retrieving all text from DOC files that are NOT MS Word

Could these be really old Word files?

Really old .doc files from Word for DOS can't be open in current versions of Word. As a test I created files in a couple old versions of Word for DOS. Here is what happened when I tried to open them with Word 2019.

Word3-5DOS.doc





Word6DOS.doc






I then went to this web site and converted these files to Word3-5DOS.docx and Word6DOS.docx. Word 2019 was then able to open the converted files.
